This luxurious, comfortable, spacious modern villa, designed by a student of the famous architect Geoffrey Bawa is set in a secluded lush tropical garden with a private swimming pool in a quiet residential area in the village of Unawatuna. The villa has been designed with "keeping cool" in mind in this hot climate. The high ceilings and many french doors from all rooms ensure a constant cooling air flow throughout the villa.

The villa is tastefully decorated with a mix of Sri Lankan antiques and modern furniture. All bedrooms are en-suite with hot water showers, have comfortable beds with mosquito nets and good quality bed linen. There are 2 bedrooms with double beds and one bedroom with two single beds. All rooms have Air Conditioning and fans. There is also a cot and highchair available.

Being one of the most biodiverse countries in the world the garden contains amazing palm, mango, papaya, araliya, avacado trees and boasts many different types of heliconias. The garden is frequently visited by interesting wildlife such as monkeys, different types of lizards, squirrels and many species of birds such as parakeets, paradise flycatchers, humming birds, kingfishers and the odd peacock.

The villa is approximately 5 minutes walk from the beautiful beach of Unawatuna which is safe for swimming or a 5 minute tuk tuk ride away from the quiet beaches of Dalawella and Talpe. Check with the locals to see where it is safe to swim at these beaches.

A significant place of interest nearby includes the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle which is 4km away from Shalini Villa. If you wish to go further afield (45 mins drive via new highway) and are a garden lover you may enjoy visiting Geoffrey Bawa's house and garden "Lunuganga" or his brother's house and garden - "Brief Garden".

Other enjoyable things you may like to do are body surfing or whale/dolphin watching at Mirissa beach, releasing a baby turtle into the indian ocean from the turtle farm at Habaraduwa, surfing, snorkelling or shipwreck diving in the aqua marine waters of Unawatuna, taking a catamaran trip on the scenic lakes at Koggala and visiting Cinnamon island, visiting nearby buddhist temples, taking a yoga class or relaxing massage in Unawatuna, hiring a bicycle and cycling inland amongst the paddy fields admiring the gorgeous views or you may just want to relax in the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of the villa.

Those who are interested in acquiring new culinary skills can have a private rice and curry cookery lesson at the villa. Be sure to try the delicious and unusual cashew nut, pineapple and banana flower curries.

There is a chef at the Villa to cook your meals for you if you wish. Or if you want to cook yourselves the Villa has a fully equipped modern kitchen. Alternatively you could try the many restaurants in Unawatuna, Dellwella, Talpe or Galle. There is a housekeeper at the Villa that comes daily and takes care of cleaning and gardening. Babysitting can be arranged if needed.

Stunning calm oasis

Just back from a week of yoga at Shalini Villa. It was one of the most beautiful places I have stayed. The attention to detail was fantastic as were all the staff who couldn't do enough for me to make my stay as restful as possible.
A great place in a fabulous country, walking distance to the beach. I can't wait to go back.

Absolute Paradise

This place is incredible! Recently returned from hosting my yoga retreat and feel overwhelmed with how smoothly everything went. The warm and attentive staff became like family and the villa our home. As soon as you step inside the gates you sense you have entered an oasis, feeling totally looked after. Restful days by the pool in the stunning green garden, beautifully prepared outdoor dinners and peaceful nights in comfy beds all allow for an amazing holiday. Cant wait to return!

Stunning Villa & breakfast with the monkey's

This Villa is as beautiful in reality as it is in the pictures. The staff are warm, welcoming, helpful as well as discreet and unobtrusive. The pool is the perfect size for kids young & old. I cannot praise this holiday enough. It was sadly only 2 nights 3 full days, but it could have been a week it was soo relaxing! We had dinner cooked by chef one evening & it was amazing!....Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home! We will, without question be back!!! xxxxx

Total peace and relaxation

After spending a week travelling around Sri Lanka we were fortunate enough to be able to stay at Shalini Villa for 10 nights. And they were the most fantastic 10 nights!

We felt like royalty in tropical surroundings, the villa is stunning and the staff are absolutely brilliant. Kamindika made sure we had everything we needed, (including a regular supply of beer for the boys) kept the place spotless and even arranged currency exchange and tuktuks for us every time we went out anywhere. Tilak cooked us the most amazing food, some of the best we've ever had, and he even taught us how to make some of the dishes. Every morning he would ask what we would like to have for lunch and dinner and then go off into the village to buy all of the local fresh ingredients.

The garden and pool are superb, we spent the majority of our time in and around the garden watching all the amazing wildlife popping by for a visit. For any ornithologists, the bird life is fantastic, we were able to sit on the verandah watching flycatchers, kingfishers, woodpeckers, bulbuls and all sorts of other birds dropping by for a dip in the pool. Not to mention the monkeys, mongoose and monitor lizard that all pop in throughout the day. 5pm was our favourite time, this was when the garden really came to life so no matter what we were doing we always made sure we were back in time to see the spectacle!

If I were to sum it up in just one word - magical. Don't hesitate to book this place, but please leave a space in the diary so we can go back!

Thank you to Alison for letting us stay, and for making the booking process so easy and answering all of our questions so promptly. We can't wait to return.

A Fortnight in Utopia

Our stay at Shalini offered the perfect blend of privacy and service. Kamindika was thoughtful and helpful, and looked after us well in a caring and light hearted manner. Tilla the cook fulfilled our culinary requests and made 'eating in' a highlight throughout our stay. The food was always freshly prepared, healthy and delicious, in fact the meals were much better than what was being offered at most of the local restaurants. The main bedroom was by the pool and garden, the villa spacious, tastefully designed with lots of areas to sit and relax depending on your mood.
We spent most of our time in the garden, enjoying the monkeys, butterflies and furry animals but our favourite were the exotic birds that visited the pool for a late afternoon dip.
The staff were inconspicuous yet manage to be present when needed. Overall, Shalini allows for peace, harmony and tranquility. We hope to return someday.
Best wishes and much good health to you all. Vincent and Nigel, Birmingham, England.

Wonderful, well maintained house and pool, Great cook and helpful staff.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The house is terrific and very comfortable. It has everything you would need and Kamindika (housekeeper) and Tilak (cook) made us very welcome. It was a treat that we also got to meet the owners Alison and Githe who very kindly arranged for us to have a discounted massage at the fabulous Sanctuary Spa in the Unawatuna village. We really enjoyed the nearby (5 mins in a TukTuk) Wijiya beach where there is a reef that makes for safer kiddie swimming and a nice (if rather Ex-pat) bar and restaurant. If there were any negatives I would say that the coastline around Galle is getting quite developed so 'away from it all' this is not and the main road at the coast is busy so travel on foot to the beach or the village is a bit hairy!

Can't recommend this villa enough for couples, families - ANYone!
Sean M [TA], , Bengaluru (Bangalore), India

My wife, 3 year old son and I stayed at the Shalini Villa last November, and it was perfect in every way! The villa itself is beautiful; a great place to while away a few relaxing hours every day before heading out to explore Unawatuna. I'd even be happy spending entire days there without going out at all. The staff is fantastic. Friendly, helpful, and what an amazing chef! Our son particularly enjoyed the monkeys that visit the trees around the villa every morning just as we finished breakfast.

I'd recommend this Villa to anyone; families with young children or teens, couples looking for a romantic getaway, small groups travelling together - all will enjoy!

One last tip - I highly recommend dinner at Kingfisher. Great nearby restaurant on the beach. Sit at a table in the sand and enjoy the freshest seafood you can get.

Five days in paradise
Cósimo A [TA], , Santander, Spain

We (3 couples around 35 from Spain) travelled to Sri Lanka at the end of November 2015 and booked Shalini Villa for the 5 last days of our trip. From the very first moment we contacted Alison she was more than helpful, providing all kind of details and getting all our questions answered. Even when we already were in the country we kept in touch via Whatsapp and she continued providing answers to all our questions. Having seen lots of hotels and other accommodations during our trip, getting to the Villa was like arriving in paradise.
Every detail, everything you can ask for is provided. The Villa is not as it is shown in the pictures, we think is even better!
Khaminda and Thila were waiting for us when we arrived late in the evening from Yala and showed all around the place and from that moment they were caring all the time to get all our needs covered.
The architecture and decoration of the house is superb, the garden and swimming pool are amazing and every detail is taken care of to the infinite.
For Thila, the cook, we have no words. He went shopping for us and cooked the most delicious meals we have tasted in the island. Even more, we would tell him a time for breakfast, having everything served on the table once we got up from bed.
Khaminda, the master, was all the time around (when needed) providing us with information on the village, tuk tuks etc, and taking care everything was fine.
Should we come back to Unawatuna, we will for sure go back to Shalini.
Even having rated the place as excellent, we can assure its much more than that.
Thanks Alison, Khaminda and Thila, and the kindest regards to you :)

Heaven on earth

We reached in the evening after a long drive and there was Kamindha and Thilaka to receive us and settle in for the night. After a nightmare stay in Kandy, the contrast to this is a villa could not be more dramatic. This is a fantastic place that thoroughly deserves its 5 star rating.
Great design, well furnished and decorated, fully equipped with every thing you want in the kitchen and villa- down to the monopoly and scabble set and massage tables.
The hall and outside sitting areas are great and the pool is just as good and well maintained. Big enough to do some swimming but better to lounge around chatting and looking at fire flies. There is lot a wild life to look at in Unawatuna- we saw monitor lizards, mongoose on the road and the house is visited by squirrels and a troop of monkeys in the morning- These keep away from humans and the house. Any bird watcher would be blown away with the variety of birds that visit.
The beach is just 100 yards away and there are stilt fishermen on the Matara side .This is a must see sight.
Bedrooms were large and the beds comfortable with a beautiful mosquito net. Bathrooms clean and everything works.
Staff- Kamindha was the general fount of local knowledge and quietly gets everything sorted for you. Massage from the local spa, tuk tuks, taxis, where to go
Thilaka is the cook with a gift of producing the most amazing meals, gives a comprehensive account of all money spent and is willing to try anything from the cookbooks in the house.
Had some fantastic fish, prawns etc and as he had some training in a hotel, so the food is presented as well as it tastes
Laundry done- no fuss.
Kitchen Equipment , crockery, cutlery, cafeterias, wine glasses, etc excellent and comprehensive
Best holiday villa I have stayed in ( and we have staying in many).
Very good and comprehensive communications and information from the owners and I should have taken up the offer to have the cook to prepare a meal for us when we arrived.
Value for money? Yes I would go back for another holiday

A little bit of heaven on earth
Dean D [TA], , London, United Kingdom

Shalini Villa is a small piece of heaven. I've been to Sri Lanka before so this 10 day holiday was one to recharge my batteries and relax. This is certainly the place to do that, the staff were amazing, the setting stunning and weather kept its part of the bargain too. The villa is beautifully decorated in a traditional Sri Lanka style, rooms large and airy and garden well maintained. The pool is great for cooling down in the afternoon heat before sitting under an umbrella and reading the day away. I cant praise this place enough. I would move in tomorrow if Ali would let me
