Apa Villa Thalpe is simply stunning.
Just 8km east of Sri Lanka's historic UNESCO-listed fortress port of Galle, Apa Thalpe is at once elegant, discreet and a retreat by some of the world's most gorgeous beaches.
Three distinctive villas house seven sumptuous suites, where the mood is stylish and leisurely as you ease into swimwear or a sarong to enjoy the seaside garden, our superb cuisine and our famous infinity pool by the Indian Ocean. Apa Thalpe evokes a gentler time, a tropical time of sun or monsoon rains, surf and splendid sunsets.

The pool is framed and shaded by swaying palms. The deck-at-beachside is the perfect location to read and snooze or simply while away the day watching the rolling waves and the fascinating fishing style of Lanka's evocative stilt fishermen, tracking ships on the horizon or spotting the giant turtles surfacing for air. Come late afternoon, and the deck is your impromptu bar to sip cocktail sundowners to close another day in paradise, before you do it all again tomorrow.

Apa Villa welcomes you to its breezy, sunny, open spaces in and around the villas. Whether seated in the interior lounge of your suite or surrendering yourself on the sun deck, you feast your eyes on the lush greenery, the clear blue waves and white foam and the dark blue depth of the swimming pool. Then you notice that the tiled sloping roofs, elegant pillars, wood-steel-and-glass furniture add up to the aesthetics and charm of the house and garden.

The three suites in the Cinnamon villa are discreet, light and airy, with a spacious lounge area spilling onto a deep outdoor terrace facing the garden and the ocean. A large double bed sits under a mosquito net canopy on a cool polished cement base. There is an en suite bathroom with hot shower, ample wardrobe space and a writing table-cum-dresser. All are air-conditioned and Cinnamon 1 connects with the neighbouring suite to create a spacious apartment for our family guests. Cinnamon 3 is the largest of the three suites, a standalone suite adjacent to the library and Apa Thalpe's common lounge.

The two Cardamon suites are separate or joined; expansive rooms with en suite bathrooms, walk-in dressing area, lounge and air-conditioned bedroom screened by evocative accordion door panels. Guests can relax on the long shared verandah of cool polished concrete, with comfortable banquette and dining table for breakfast in the cool morning air, or a romantic candlelit dinner. The view is stunning, to the pool and the surging ocean horizon beyond.

The two Saffron suites stand out as lovely places to while away a holiday. These designer suites have their own verandahs overlooking the garden and sea. Doubled bedrooms adjoin a master bathroom with separate doors to the garden, living room and pool. The two suites are separated by a fish-filled lily pond, and Saffron 6 is the most spacious of Apa's seven suites.

Simply fantastic

We had 8 wonderful days at this fantastic hotel. The grounds are beautiful with a stunning view of sandy white beaches and the Indian Ocean. We stayed in Saffron suite 7, which was very spacious. Having the verandahs in front for breakfast and sitting out in the evening was just lovely, and the breakfasts, both Sri Lankan and western, were excellent. We treated ourselves to the 'Seafood Celebration' one night, which was delicious. Beautifully cooked fish, lobster and prawns, and the calamari starter was some of the best we have ever had.
Our 5 year old daughter loved the infinity pool (as did we!). The staff were wonderful. Very professional and friendly, striking the perfect balance between being available if you needed anything, but generally leaving you to your own devices. The location is good too, with a short tuk tuk ride to both Galle and plenty of restaurants in Unawatuna.
It's also not far to the sister hotel, Illuketia, which is definitely worth a visit with stunning gardens, and again, a nice infinity pool.
Thank you again to everyone at Apa Villa for a really relaxing end to our Sri Lankan holiday.

Room Tip: We were very happy with Saffron 7

This was the best place on our 2 week tour of Sri Lanka. Excellent food, wonderful staff, brilliant location, peaceful, quiet - heaven on earth. Right on the beach, rooms were fabulous. Can't wait to come back again.

Nice small hotel on the beach with an infinity swimming pool. Large spacious rooms with ante area and outside dining area for each unit. Coy fish swimming in the pools around the rooms. Staff was attentive and meals were good.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Safron villa at the far end; very nice

This hotel is ace! Its beach front location is great and the pool is just WOW! We only stayed for one night but could have stayed longer, and if we come back we will !

The staff were just lovely people, the service was top, and the hammocks... well I miss those to this day.

Thanks to you all for a great time :)

Room Tip: They are all good, the suites have a nice outside chill out area

Exceeded Expectations

We have just returned from a wonderful 8 night stay at Apa Villa, Thalpe. We were a little apprehensive before we reached there due to mixed reviews on here, but in our opinion this place is a gem.

The pictures on here and on their website do t do the place or the accommodation justice. The grounds and pool are absolutely stunning and the rooms are very comfortable and chic.

We travelled with a son, who is an active toddler. The only downsides for us were the pool being so tempting for him (but after a few days we had trained him-ish) and the polish concrete floors to the verandas- beautiful and stylish but very sloppy when wet, and for children of that age a little dangerous, after a few falls he wore sandals at all times and we got over this.

The food was very tasty and reasonably priced and the staff were very attentive.

The whole set up was great for us. Beautiful grounds, shared with a small amount of other guests; throughout our stay a good mix of families and couples.

The owner was present on and off throughout the week- dining, viewing, checking in. You can tell that this is a well maintained property and business.

Would highly recommend. A very relaxing holiday!

With the exception of the a/c unit flooding one of our cupboards we were really pleased with our stay here. The flood was caused by a drainage pipe from the unit becoming blocked; a maintenance man came out and fixed the problem within 2 hours. Luckily, we had not fully unpacked so no clothes were damaged or got wet.
Food and service were excellent; in fact we ate there every night except one. We were even provided with sandwiches for our journey back to the airport! We took the opportunity to visit the sister hotel which we thought was fabulous and had lunch there. One tiny moan, one member of staff was ‘fishing’ for tips, he didn’t need to, we left a tip for all the staff in an envelop we gave to the manager. stay there!

Very mixed experience
Travel M [TA], , Beijing, China

We spent 3 nights in this Hotel in Feb. 2016 and unfortunately we had a very mixed experience.
Let me start with the positive aspects.
The premises and the pool and garden area are really very very nice. It is directly located on the beach and has a wonderful pool (although it is not too big).
Behind the pool there is direct access to the beach. The beach however is very small and narrow, so it is hard to have a good time there. There are no facilities on the beach like sun chairs or umbrellas. It is just too small and too narrow. At the same time the current on that stretch of beach is quite heavy, so you better don’t dare swimming there.
So the pool is the only option you have for swimming.
The rooms are very clean and ok, however they are a bit substandard for the price category.
There is no TV and no phone in the room, so you cannot call for room service, there is also no mini-bar / fridge in the room. (and we even booked theit top class room).
Ehen we checked in we asked for it and the lady told me that they will bring one within 45 mins. After 3 days there still was no fridge, despite several reminders.
The safe deposit box was broken and it took almost an hour to get it fixed.
They offer you courtesy free water in the room in 2 refilled glass bottles which are unlabeled and unsealed, so we better did not drink it and buy our own water.
The selection of food and beverages is only very limited.
And I am sad to say that on our last night when we had their “signature dish”, the Rjistafel (Rice Plater) which features various curries among other stuff, both my spouse and I got a food poisoning. In my case it was quite severe.
So to put it in a nutshell: Would I come back to this hotel: No
Would I recommend it to my friends: No.
Just because there are better options for your money.

Lovely place to relax

A lovely place to relax with very helpful staff and great food. We had suite Cinnamon 1 which does have a rather functional bathroom with the toilet in the shower cubicle, which was odd! Otherwise the room was pleasant, clean and comfortable. Another time I would go for a Cardoman Suite. The pool and the outlook onto the beach was lovely, though we were never up in time to grab one of the four 'pole position' sun-loungers looking straight on to the ocean and breaking waves. We had a very nice trip into Galle in a tuk-tuk - for 1400 rupees the driver waited 3 hours for us and took us back, which was really helpful, though we had to resist a lot of suggestions of places to stop at (market, spa, temples etc).

Room Tip: Cardoman suites are the most luxurious

Stunning, I wish I could have staid a week!
Simone B [TA], , Greater London, United Kingdom

The property is beautiful and very well kept, and the rooms very large and tastefully decorated. The food is absolutely delicious and served to a table right outside of your room, whenever you want it. There is not only Sri Lankan food, but also Singaporean, Malay and Chinese food, in addition to some European fare (their chocolate mousse was incredible!). I also loved the strong coffee, something not easily found in Sri Lanka. The infinity pool and hammocks, together with the property's tranquility make this place perfect for anybody looking to relax in a personable yet elegant environment. Make sure to go to their sister hotel inland, which is absolutely stunning, either just to spend the day, or for cookery classes.

Just outside of Galle, is this treasure of a hotel. The staff were so nice and helpful and we spent a wonderful 2 nights there, I would go again but make sure I didn't have room one I only say this because of the shower being with the loo, not ideal. The room itself was large and comfortable and outside a terrace for your breakfast, beautiful view, great food what more does one want?
