Small gem of a hotel on isolated beach
CQBrownie [TA], , New York

We LOVED Good Karma! This small hotel is peaceful X 1000. The beautiful rooms face either the ocean or a garden view, but all are just steps away from the lovely beach side pool and restaurant. Dine every morning and night overlooking the crashing waves. Stroll along the deserted beach, take in the stunning starscape at night, enjoy a beer or cocktail at sundown. It's pretty much paradise here.

The restaurant serves good food at tourista prices, and you're pretty much stuck on site so that's the only knock. We felt a little trapped at times, bored by the lack of walkable restaurant options and limited menu. But hey, that's the price you pay for a beach all to yourself and ten other guests.

The hotel is owned by a Russian couple, so the entrance says "To Russia with Love" and there are a few nods to Russia on the menu, like potatoes available instead of rice and some stews, etc. I felt the only improvement could be a little more Sri Lankan charm and authenticity. Very few come to Tangalle to enjoy the Russian influence :)

Room Tip: Ask for ocean front and/or second floor room!

Beautiful resort

We stayed in one of the romantic villas, couldn't have asked for more. The villa was perfect and very clean. The food was gorgeous and staff couldn't be more helpful. Would recommend going on the safari from the resort and eating at Cactus cafe in the town.

Amazing quiet beach hotel
Chris A [TA], , New York City, New York

Good Karma is a fantastic hotel. There are only a small number of rooms, so each guest gets special treatment by the staff. And the staff is really excellent. Everyone is friendly and accommodating, and want to make your stay perfect. The rooms are gorgeously decorated and are all only steps away from the pool and beach. The food at the restaurant is fantastic. Make sure to order the Sri Lankan breakfast at least one morning - it's amazing. They also will serve fresh catch of the day. The last day we were there they had a huge mackerel they were going to fillet and serve that evening. We saw the fisherman further down the beach catch it that morning. The location is the only piece that may not be ideal depending on your goal - it isn't near really anything, so unless you want to hop in a tuktuk you're going to have to eat at the hotel's restaurant. There just really aren't other options. The hotel restaurant is a great option though - all the dishes we had were delicious, and the hotel's restaurant is right on the beach, so you can watch the waves crash while having your meal. Also, by being a bit isolated you get a private beach. My wife and I were able to walk miles along the beach and see literally nobody except for the local fishermen. If you're looking for seclusion, this is the spot. All in all this hotel is an incredible option if you want to get away from the hustle of the busier beaches further west.

Fantastic location

This is a place were you can just relax after touring Sri Lanka. It is a small boutique hotel on a kilometre long sandy beach and hardly any people. In the mornings you can watch the fishermen pulling in their catch, hard work, but you are always welcome to give them a hand.
The suites are large and comfortable with lovely bathrooms and there is also a fridge in the room. The gardens are a picture and great care and attention is paid to keep it that way. The swimming pool is also very clean and of reasonable size. On this beach it is a must as the sea is often very rough.
The Restaurant is directly on the beach and all the food is freshly prepared and delicious. There is always a choice of fresh fish and we often went in the kitchen and discussed our dinner menu with the chef. The Sri Lankan curry is also highly recommendable. Breakfast is great, everything made to order and lots of fresh fruit and fresh fruit juice. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and I would like to thank them again for the lovely surprise on my birthday. Candlelight dinner on the beach and a fantastic cake.

A great choice far away from loud cities and civilization!
September... [TA], , Munich, Germany

We stayed in the Good Karma for 9 nights.
It is a great place for those who want to get far away from loud cities and civilization!
We stayed in the house #4 in the room on the 1th floor with the ocean view. The room itself was adorable, clean and decorated with the local authentic elements. Nice balcony with the bench and chairs. There are a small fridge and a kettle in the room. The bathroom is big. No TV and it is great if you like such kind of holiday and we do! WiFi is available everywhere around including beach.
Beach restaurant has no a big menu but you appreciate that because you understand that all what they cook is fresh. So it is natural that it takes time to cook because it is not half prepared food, so be patient. I do recommend “catch of the day” and lobster. Tuna would not be my choice although it is not bad but they overcook it. Espresso is very good! Tip - order by cup!
Nice and clean pool! Not big but very cozy green hotel area.
There are turtles around but you can not see them often. But we watched the baby turtles came out to this world from the eggs. That was unforgettable experience!!!
According the advice we booked a boat trip across the lagoon. We saw lots of monkeys, water lilies and a variety of birds.
To go outside the hotel is best by motor scooter. Booking is easy through the manager. Try to drive scooter and you will get a lot of positive emotions and pleasure. It was interesting to see nearest town fruit market and the other time we drove to Hela Bojun Hala and taste there among local people true regional food and visited a nice park. It is only 30 min drive by scooter.
Thanks to the owners of Good Karma - Sergey and Venera - for making our stay stress free, helping to organize a nice event for our anniversary day and all priceless tips!
It is not a hotel for families with the children or for people who like to party. Good Karma is the best choice to anyone looking for a great accommodation for a good price and a chance to see some natural beauty of the surrounding!

Room Tip: Room on the first floor close to the beach

Stunning Beach - far away from the madding crowds of tangalle
Charles16... [TA], , London, United Kingdom

Stayed Dec 2015 Xmas / 8 nights

The beach is amazing. As the hotels on this beach stretch are small privately owned, it helps helps to keep the beach clean. I am not sure how long this beach will stay like this so it is a must go now. This is perfect paradise is aided by the small bumpy road and lagoon located behind the beach. In the rainy season this road can flood. Cars will find it hard drive down this road, but if you phone the hotel a tuctuc will fetch you at the being of the road. If you want quiet and tranquility, I am not sure you can do much better than this beach.

The hotel is set in a lush garden keeping up to the good karma name. The hotel rooms are a basic, but airy and clean. We stayed with a sea front room and the sound of the waves were soothing in morning and evening. The extra services like cars to the airport worked (people went on day trips and they did not have any problems). I have to recommend taking a full body massage. I wish I had more than 1. You eat on a covered wood veranda right on the beach. The food is fresh and well made. Fresh fish from the days catch (you can watch them unload if you are up in time) cooked well. Talk to the chef if you need something slightly different, they are accommodating to the extent of the food available. All the staff were the usual Sri Lankan kind generous personalities. Some were shy and tentative when speaking English, be patient and they get what you need.

Those with small children should be attentive when they go into the sea. There were a few big dips in the sand in front of the hotel. Look for the colour differences in sea and work out what is safe. The pool is refreshing and clean.

There are a few dogs on the beach. They are more likely to kill you through loving you to death than being aggressive. This is a massive difference to the dogs in India. Still best not to treat them like your own.

There are limited options to food in the area and limited shopping availability. Bring what you need like sun tan cream and reading material. Those desperate for wifi, sit on the couch in front of the kitchen block. Those that want massive parties in large night clubs, book somewhere else.

Why it did not get amazing.
1) No safe in the rooms (not needed, but a nice to have)
2) Front of house seemed to make things more chaotic
3) Should probably invest in a more sophisticated room booking method as the book with pen and paper seemed to lead to a few problems.
4) To make this an amazing hotel, it needs some order and control, not many orders from different management levels.
5) taxi drivers have problems finding the hotel, put a sign up by the main road, the turning by the bus stop and then the one down the side of the lagoon.

Many thanks for a good stay

Desserted beach, great place to relax
Joe H [TA], , London, United Kingdom

Good Karma is a lovely place to relax for a few days. Very spacious room and bathroom - fantastic shower and good quality a/c. Pool and beach were great. As others have said, the sea is quite rough but we were still able to swim/ jump through the waves every day. The property is remote, which means that there isn't much going on but that the beach is practically desserted for miles. The members of staff were very friendly, particularly Akila.

The food was tasty; Sri Lankan breakfast got top marks and the evening curries and freshly caught lobster were delicious and good value (most meals roughly 5 GBP, lobster double).

We took a day trip to Yala, which was arranged by the hotel - everything ran smoothly and we had a great guide who spoke fluent English. In the region of 30 GBP for entrance and safari vehicle/ driver, 20 GBP for transport to and from Yala. The hotel can also arrange tuk tuk drivers, which we took advantange of for a ride into Tangalle - we can recommend sunset cocktails Amanwella (London prices), and Cactus Lounge for a tasty sea food dinner (main meals cheaper than a cocktail!).

For those travelling to/ from Colombo - we booked a taxi through Ceylon airport transfers. The drive took around 3.5 hours and cost 65 GBP, all main currencies accepted. This was the cheapest quote I found by some way and the driver was very pleasant and informative.

Room Tip: We had a room with sea view, which was delightful

Beachside retreat
shaz66363 [TA], , London, United Kingdom

Good karma is set in beautiful well maintained gardens on a isolated sandy beach, with near by lagoons a must for nature lovers.
The suites are modern and tastefully designed, and there is a beach side restaurant, serving fresh food but limited choice, with fresh fish daily, little in means of vegetables which was surprising as grows locally in abundance.
And a welcome pool as sadly the ocean is very turbulent which can be dangerous.
The owner is never far away and is very friendly and accommodating as are all the staff. A must for those who wish to escape and relax.
Spent 3 nights here and loved every minute.would recommend.

Complete Relaxation
Sally W [TA], , United Kingdom

What a wonderful place! Five days of relaxation in a beautiful villa with a private pool, surrounded by well kept tropical gardens. We went back because three days were not enough last year and then we stayed in one of the excellent suites facing the sea. All rooms are clean and spacious with very good A/C and tasteful decoration. The food lacked star quality but was good enough, with freshly caught fish on the menu daily. The staff were happy and obliging. The dining area is just about on the beach, which is an immaculately clean stretch of white sand with only fishermen spreading their nets on each side in the distance. There is also a lovely calm area set aside for yoga and a new spa building that offers amazing treatments. I can recommend the foot massage. Good Karma is an idyllic place. The owners are helpful and welcoming and we would love to visit again.

Idyllic beach location
Steve L [TA], , Bury, United Kingdom

This was an idyllic place to chill in luxury after our tour. We booked a villa with its own pool as our daughter joined us for 2 nights. The restaurant is next to a quiet beach (sea can be rought!) and the food good, althought the menu was fairly restricted. The facilities are excellent - we enjoyed the ayurvedic massage - and the staff were all very friendly
