Arrived here as 1st time visitors to Sri Lanka in March 2013.
Only picked Unawatuna as we loved the name! and I am so pleased we did.
The hotel was "far from the maddening crowd" with a wonderful sign hanging from a tree saying "your noise disturbs nature". Lots of water features around the small garden and pool area with floating fresh flowers evry day. I was desperate to see the local attraction of monkeys at this hotel and this is where the thanks to the manager fits in. I told him and every day he gave me an update of where they were or indeed one day even tried to find me to let me know they were very near! The food in the restaurant was of a very good standard both the inclusive breakfast and the a la carte meals in the evening. We cannot wait to come back here next year only hope the same manager will be there, as there was an opening of a new branch of this hotel whilst we were there and he may have moved on.

Well worth it

We loved this place the moment we saw it. We gat a very good price on agoda and thought it was good value for money. The pool area is lovely and tropical. It is close to the beach but far enough away to be quiet. The service was great and the staff friendly. The food in the restaurant is fantastic. The rooms are very nice but the bathrooms need an upgrade. Overall we would recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.
Disappointing and poor value for money

Free wi-fi, but not available in all the rooms.We (2 couples) had booked two tower suites. One suite was full of mould the cupboards in both suites were damp and had mould on the walls. What this hotel considers to be a suite is not really a suite as per the definition of a suite. The suite in this hotel comprises of just one room, which has a few chairs and a bed but no sofa set. When asked about this, the manager said this is what they consider to be a suite according to them. Bathrooms were in a poor state. Some care to detail will turn this hotel into a decent place.This hotel has no sea view rooms.
Fantastic hideaway

We booked Thambapanni on Agoda the night before our stay, and got a flash deal 62% off the rack rate.
It is set back from the beach in a quiet street, only a short walk by the shops and restaurants to the gorgeous Unawatuna beach.
We've stayed on the beach before and it can be a nightmare with noisy bars and banging music coming at you from all sides. So this was really a welcome retreat, only a few minutes from the action.
We stayed in a deluxe room with a balcony overlooking the small pool. The room was huge, 13m long, with a lovely 4 poster bed, antique furniture, all in dark wood and great air conditioning.
The bathroom was a bit odd, a rustic bath and a weak shower, but ok.
There was a constant stream of ants in the corner of the bathroom wall, but they were busy going about their business and didn't disturb us at all. There are birds nesting in a lot of the light shades on the balcony and around the outside of the hotel. It is a very natural setting and to be expected. They also seem to be prone to short power cuts, so keep a torch handy.....
The staff was so welcoming and friendly, and the room was cleaned and made up every day.
We loved this place and wished we could have stayed longer. Unawatuna itself is a great place with plenty of bars and restaurants, and a fantastic beach.
Overall Thambapanni is in a lovely serene setting, tastefully decorated in a colonial style and well maintained. The staff is extremely attentive without being in your face, and I would thoroughly recommend it.
Slechtste hotel van onze rondreis

De kamers zijn erg muf. Onze kamer zat op de begane grond naast de receptie. We hadden best wat overlast van andere gasten. Het eten was slecht, met smoesjes dat de kok er nog niet was kregen we een diepvriespizza voorgeschoteld. De locatie is niet geweldig , ver van het strand en de omgeving is niet geweldig.

Avoid this place if you don't wanna sharing your space with squirrels :) The colorful butterflies and birds fly straight above the pool.
Food in the restaurant was great. The chef was a magician!
The bathroom was awful but the the bedroom was clean.
The area just by the side of the hotel had few restaurants and small shops. Relaxing and no noise from the traffic.
WiFi was OK.
The staff was polite and extremely helpful. Would stay here again.
prettig hotel na de vliegreis en aan 't begin van onze rondreis

Bij aankomst uiterst plezierig welkom geheten en na een drankje begonnen aan onze klim naar boven, waar we op de bovenste verdieping een mooie rustige kamer aantroffen, voorzien van al het nodige. Een onderdompeling in het kleine maar wel prettige zwembad was onze volgende stap, waarna we ons lieten verwennen met ter plekke bereidde verse gamba's met knoflook aan de voet van het zwembad. Het restaurant heeft een goede keuken waar, je bij navraag over een bepaald gerecht, meteen de chef aan tafel krijgt die meteen aanbood iets buiten de kaart (echt Sri Lankaans) voor ons te maken. Men vertelde ons dan ze over een paar dagen een tweede hotel aan 't strand zouden gaan openen. ?
Séjour à Unawatuna

Nous sommes restez 4 nuits dans cet hôtel, nous avions la chambre N°6 tout en haut, très belle chambre et très belle terrasse parmi la végétation, mais il faut savoir qu'elle se mérite elle est tout en haut et cela représente environ 5 étages à monter. il y a plein d'interrupteurs partout, faire attention, celui sur la terrasse éteint l'eau chaude !! si vous ne voulez pas vous retrouver sans eau chaude sans le savoir !!!!
Le restaurant est plus moyen, la qualité de la nourriture n'est pas en cause mais les set de tables pas toujours nickel !!!
Possibilité de se faire masser sur place, Samantha (c'est un homme !) vous masse très bien. il ne faut pas hésiter
Possibilité de prendre une douche le dernier jour de séjour après avoir rendu la clé de la chambre.
Le personnel est accueillant, c'est un bon établissement mais un peu cher pour le Sri Lanka
En deçà de nos attentes...

Nous avions initialement réservé une chambre au Thaproban Beach House en Mars 2013 par l'intermédiaire de Booking.com. Notre arrivée s'est traduite par une orientation forcée vers un autre hôtel du groupe, le Thaproban Pavillion, le "manager" local nous signifiant qu'ils avaient commis une erreur, mais que les choses étaient ainsi et que avions l'obligation de nous y conformer!!! Notre refus d'être logés dans ce bâtiment en béton alors que nous avions réservé sur un hôtel de plage pour une durée de 9 nuits m'a amené à solliciter cet établissement où les intéressés ont "daigné" nous réorienter!!! Je tiens donc à dénoncer une attitude méprisante et péremptoire de la part des responsables de ces établissements. Le Thambapanni Retreat est un hôtel de moyenne gamme à 300 mètres de la plage d'Unawatuna. Notre bungalow était assez original, avec une grande terrasse, et la particularité d'un rocher au beau milieu de notre chambre ainsi que dans la salle de douche. Un accès par 42 marches déconseillera les bungalows aux personnes âgées ou à mobilité réduite. Sinon, en dehors d'un lit à baldaquin orné d'une moustiquaire en tulle blanc, et d'une literie king size (1,8m de large), l'équipement de la chambre demeurait assez sommaire avec des meubles certes anciens mais malheureusement assez délabrés (portes de la penderie qui ne ferment pas). Le téléviseur ne diffusait en tout et pour tout que 3 chaînes (CNN, BBC et DW) en langue anglaise alors que le programme de l'hôtel mentionnait Télé5Monde à tort. Un mini réfrigérateur et un coffre complétaient l'ensemble. J'ajouterais que la terrasse, non dénuée de charme avec un hamac et des chaises longues, était cernée par la jungle. Des singes passaient régulièrement devant ainsi que d'autres animaux comme des écureuils. L'inconvénient était posé par la multitude de moustiques et par l'obligation de se vaporiser les jambes d'un spray. Enfin, l'équipement électrique présente de fréquentes défaillances comme dans l'ensemble de la station. Le petit déjeuner était complet et servi à la table (jus de fruits frais, curd au miel, toasts, oeufs et thé ou café). La piscine est assez assez séduisante malgré l'absence en nombre suffisant de transats. Le côté le plus négatif de cet établissement est, comme partout au SRI LANKA, l'accumulation de taxes diverses qui a fait grimper la note par nuitée à 95€ ce qui correspond à un prix relativement élevé au regard de la qualité globale de cet hôtel qui peut paraître surcoté.
Bien pour Unawatuna mais...

Cet hôtel est situé en retrait de la plage dans une impasse au milieu de bâtiments en travaux. L'environnement est moyen mais on s'aperçoit rapidement que cet hôtel est dans la moyenne supérieure des hôtels que l'on peut trouver à Unawatuna, à se demander s'il ne vaut pas mieux choisir une des nombreuses guest houses qui sont d'un bon niveau avec vue sur la plage et le magnifique océan indien. Ne pas prendre dans cet hôtel la formule demi pension qui propose des plats européanisés et de bas de gamme alors que la carte propose tous les jours la pêche du jour avec langoustes et crevettes jumbo. Il faut mieux manger dans un des nombreux restaurants du bord de mer qui ont une carte variée avec la pêche du jour.cela dit, Unawatuna est un endroit très agréable pour finir un séjour au Sri Lanka, avec de nombreux clubs de plongée. À recommander en particulier le club Sea Horse Diving dont la boutique donne directement sur la plage et qui propose de nombreuses plongées dans les récifs.
