If Sri Lanka is a pearl in the Indian Ocean, then Thampabani Retreat is a pure gem!... Nestled in a lush garden full of perfumed flowers and wildlife (chipmunks, parakeets, peacocks and even monkeys can be observed from your balcony or the swimming pool), this charming hotel offers a quiet comfortable oasis. It's a stroll away from the beach and you can use the facilities of their other hotel, Thaproban Beach House.
We had a superior standard with a shared balcony overlooking the garden and the pool. Perfect to sip a drink before dinner or relaxing by a rainy day (yes, if the country is like a botanical garden, it's because it rains sometimes even during the "dry" season. We all have stormy days during our summer).
The room was bright and spacious with plenty of storage and a small desk. The four posters bed with mosquito net was large and very very comfortable. I slept like a baby... The bathroom is also bright and spacious.
The hotel is superbly maintained. The pool, the garden, the terrace are cleaned all day long.
The service is excellent. The staff attentive and anticipating your needs. They always have a word with you.
The breakfast is superb, especially if you ask for the Sri Lankan specialities (string hoppers, roti, milk rice, all served with spicy curry).Yummy!
The food at the restaurant is by the way excellent. Fantastic chef!
And, ice on the cake, the Ayurvedic massage we had are amongst the best we ever had.
In short, you can only have a fantastic stay at Thambapani.
