Really surprised!

Wonderful, amazing, excellent and great! It all goes to the location ,staff, and to the safari . Our special thanks to Sumith and Damian the naturalist .Our safari was exceptional as we were so lucky to see a leopard close by for the first time in nature. At the same time we saw a herd of elephants and a tusker. And In the morning various birds close to our tent.We were so happy that we spent our time for such a adventurous trip .

Safari...So goody
ColsyM [TA], ,

We have just had 2 nights at the Elephant Lake Yala "Glamping" inclusive of a Yala Park safari. Damian the guide, was extremely knowledgable, continually calling out the type of birds too, a sincerely nice man.

I would have given 5 stars, but for some the electrical and hot water problems we did encountered. Whilst this was not a major problem for us, some of the potential guests should be aware.

The other thing that I would point out is that the transport infrastructure is limited. We came down from Colombo by train on the Rhajadhani Express (definitely book 1st class) to Mantara - circa 950 rupees p/p. Then we got a taxi that cost about 4000 rupees (£20) p/p - well worth paying, as the buses were full to the brim. The taxi took about 3.5 hours On the return leg we decided to get a taxi all the way to Hikkaduwa- that costs £60 total. My suggestion is to factor these costs in your budget, otherwise it will be a difficult and tiring excursion.

Overall we had a fabulous time and I would recommend to our family & friends as a "must do" when coming to Sri Lanka.

Great surroundings, very courteous staff

The tents were certainly luxurious, with toilet and shower ensuite.

The location was in the buffer zone I guess. A great place to spend a few days a minds chirping crickets and wake up to the sound of songbirds.
The camp is on the banks of Yala Lake and one can spend hours watching birds of all types.
The staff are very courteous and will make every effort to ensure they take care of their guests, which is not easy, given their location.
Chamara, Mithun and. Mithun's brother were always around whenever we wanted something.
It would be advisable to book "full board" as the nearest town is about 4 kilometres away.
The camp also has safari facilities and it is great fun to go on one, however one would have to be incredibly lucky to see a leopard. I booked 3 and saw everything but.

All in all, a great place to stay for nature enthusiasts. Not for people who cringe at the thought of insects. The lights at night is a magnet for all kinds of insects.

Blend with nature
dilan c [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

We are a doctor family, having two kids (both girls). We stayed there one night and had the yala safari on the next day morning. We recommend this place as a place THAT YOU MUST VISIT if you want to blend with nature. The hospitality was exceptional. Every facility provided was GREAT, including food and the comfortable room. This yala safari was the best ever safari we had. We must say that Mr Damien Crusz, the Naturalist is an asset to this camp.

Room Tip: the tent next to the lake may be the best

close to nature in style - and comfort
Peter T [TA], , London, United Kingdom

We stayed here with our three children in a tent large enough to be cool and comfortable with an en suite and patio. The location is remote enough to feel away from people and very close to nature, but still close to the entrance to Yala national park. The staff couldn't do enough to make us feel at home and talk to us about the wildlife - the food was amazing, especially our barbecue under the stars. We went on two safaris with a super helpful guide and saw many elephants, monkeys, crocs, peacocks and - at long last - a leopard. With wi-fi, space to walk and explore, Elephant Lake is ideal for backpackers and families alike.

Spectacular Safari and Camp Experience

I highly recommend a stay in this incredibly well run camp and amazingly beautiful safari in the park. Right from the time we arrived we were totally blown away by the camp set up. Our tent was very spacious and comfortable. There is no negative I can think of. We had a perfect ensuite and great balcony facing the camp perimeter.

As for the safari we were truly lucky to have booked this stay as the naturalist Damian was incredibly helpful and welcoming of us right from our arrival. He was a great source of information and hugely interesting to listen to.

All the staff were exceptional and made every bit of our stay excellent. The food was really delicious and the evening dinner under the stars by a campfire was the highlight dinner of our trip to Sri Lanka.

Our safari experience was excellent in our jeep. We had an early start before sunrise and after a great introduction to the safari experience seeing a variety of the parks beautiful wildlife, we made our way to the beach for breakfast on the beach. We continued on through the park meeting elephants, crocodiles, deer and buffalo. Our tasty lunch was by a river in the shade with a picnic table and chairs watching the monkeys play overhead. After lunch we were in for an even bigger treat as the evening began to cool all the big animals. We came up close to a herd of elephants and their babies and were lucky to see a black bear all just meters away from our jeep walking by oblivious to us and the other jeeps watching. Sadly the leopard was the only animal we didn't get to see. As night fell we headed back to camp and we couldn't be luckier as we came across a large bull elephant passing our camp on his way to the lake. Our experience was without doubt an unforgettable one. We both wished we had longer there. We hope to return again to enjoy the experience.

I really recommend anyone interested in visiting Yala to stay here. There is simply no better way of experiencing the best of Yala than this authentic and luxurious camping experience. Thanks again to Damian and all the wonderful staff for such a memoriable stay.

Nothing to wow about it....

This is an average camp site. Stayed at "Grey Hornbill" tent with my wife and two & half year old son. first about the staff, they are pretty much accommodative & helpful. from safari driver to site manager to the owner of the property, all are quite friendly. had a nice safari with Damien & driver. they use renewable energy, all tents are solar powered. However, the tents are not properly maintained although they are quite new. got to clean them regularly. worst part is I saw a rat running in the toilet (you may call it, "eco", but it is pure lack of cleanliness). the toilet zinc has a block, water wasn't flowing properly. they have put the solar inverter right underneath the bed. so you can feel the hum easily. bit noisy in the night. they got to do something with the shower/washing water. its very salty. not sure what they try to do with the food, its indeed below average. we had all 3 meals, non of them were good. I think this is, penny wise pound foolish. need to improve much on quality, the portion, taste, presentation, etc... on food.

The great outdoors in luxury!
girlhasma... [TA], , Mirissa, Sri Lanka

Set in beautiful surroundings this luxury camping site offers a peaceful stay with a lovely view of the wildlife around. The tents are comfortable and eco friendly, separated so you feel like you have your own bit of the wilderness. The food is excellent and staff are both knowledgeable and friendly! A lovely treat was also being allowed to stay outside of the elephant fence for a late evening whilst having staff guarding us for elephant invasion! Also access to wifi for those who struggle to disconnect!

Wonderful staff & fab safari

From the moment we arrived at Elephant Lake Yala the team could not do enough for us! They were all extremely friendly and helpful and provided service with a smile.
The safari was excellent and although we didn't see a full leopard (just the tail!) we saw lots of other animals and were given an informative and fun trip by our driver and guide. A highlight of our whole trip was getting to see 6 elephants playing in the water together - a very memorable experience.
The tent was very comfortable and the meals were all filling. We were even able to dine under the stars due to us being the only guests on that particular night :)
All in all, we had a great stay here and would definitely recommend it to friends.
Thank you to all the guys, you were great!

Best Camping Expreience EVER!!!
Enrico P [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

Excellently located near a lake within minutes from the Yala park gate.

Each tent is tastefully furnished with all the extras for that silver-lining of luxury. Anyone would be hard-pressed to comment anything negative, but being a 'foody' myself, if there was one area i'd like to see improvement that would be it!

The kids had a good 'introduction' to camping and Vijay & Sumith had plenty to deal with answering all their quick-witted questions....

An absolutely certain return trip for me, the family and friends.

2 thumbs up and a great big smile!!!!!!!
