Once the home of a Scottish spice merchant, this colonial house built in the 1860’s has been converted into a small hotel which exudes a country house atmosphere. With 7 highly individual bedrooms, it is well known for its fine dining, its privacy, its eclectic collection of artwork, books and furniture. Perched high on a hill yet only a 5 minute stroll away from the centre of the seaside town of Galle, The Sun House offers panoramic views of the Galle and the world heritage site of Fort Galle.

At The Sun House we offer our guests the ideal chance of being transported back to the relaxed life styles of the planters, when a day began with a hearty breakfast and finished with a cocktail at sunset.

This glorious house has been renovated to maintain its colonial charm and elegance.
The large central living area is the heart of the house. A place where, at the end of the day, our guests can browse through the eclectic selection of books, sink into a relaxing sofa, listen to whatever music takes their fancy while enjoying a pot of up-country tea or perhaps something a little stronger like the famous “Sun House Sour” or let our barman mix up a surprise cocktail at Dick’s Bar, nominated as one of the best cocktail bars in the world and now Galle’s meeting point of choice..

There are two beautiful tropical gardens; The fragrant frangipani (“temple tree”) garden, leading to the swimming pool, and the mango garden which faces a stunning view of Galle harbour. The gardens are an idyllic and serene place for guests to relax, read, write or sunbathe.

Delicious fusion cuisine is served and meals can be taken in either the dining room, on one of the house’s airy verandahs or in the garden under the mango tree. Dick’s bar offers a more simple menu of salads, soups and pies.

The Sun House is a peaceful retreat offering a friendly and relaxed environment with service that is discreet yet efficient.

It is the perfect spot to explore the area and most importantly relax, unwind and eat well!

Special, one of a kind experience

Our family loved our two day stay at The Sun House. The house is a beautiful example of colonial architecture with gorgeous antique furnishings throughout. The food was wonderful, the rooms are gorgeous with wonderful attention to detail. The staff was attentive, friendly and very helpful. Staying at the Sun House was a perfect way to begin our Sri Lankan vacation.

Nice hotel
bob s [TA], ,

This hotel is an amazing place to stay, the staff is excellent the views are amazing it's a very old world feel to staying in a modern day Sri Lanka. I will say, for the price of this place, somethings should be updated like towels and sheets. There is a driver waiting to take you into town if you want to go to the fort or to the local shopping area. There is one man with no legs who drives a tuk tuk that waits outside and he is one of the nicest humans I've ever met. All the staff was great. Overall excellent experience

Lovely spot, great food

Our daughter came here last year and suggested it to us. We arrived plus our friends. We had a deluxe room, Hibiscus which was delightful although the bathroom left something to be desired. Although it says in the website the bathrooms are new it is in fact some 15 years since they were updated and they need it now if this is to continue to be a deluxe boutique hotel. The bathroom being outside wasn't great as there were quite a lot of mosquitos. Good a/c and a spacious and quiet room. Our friends had the smallest standard room which they were a bit disappointed with.

The whole place is quirky and colonial and delightful but as others have said it is a little tired and although the main rooms are fine, the bedrooms/bathrooms need some attention.

The food was excellent and some of the best we had had in Sri Lanka and the staff were utterly charming, delightful and efficient, nothing was too much trouble, again, some of the best service we had in Sri Lanka. Cocktails at Dick's bar - Arak sour, passionfruit cocktail, all superbly done.

The pool is small, but we were able to use the one at the Dutch house which is larger.
It is very convenient for Galle and a 15 min walk gets you to the Fort or a Tuktuk is always available.

We enjoyed our stay enormously but if it is to continue, it does need some TLC and upgrading.

Quirky colonial house

I have thought a lot about whether this deserves 4 or 5 stars - in the end 5 stars.
We requested cinnamon suite and were given Dumas - as we arrived in 38degree heat we were grateful as the Dumas has aircon! Our friends stayed in the deluxe araliya which was also lovely - although request no one to have breakfast outside your door if you want a lie-In!
Food was excellent. Breakfast 1200 rupees for the full monty. Dinner - set with 2 or 3 choices and 3 courses was excellent for 3500 rupees. ( plus taxes of course!).
Lovely lit location over the garden and pool.
The pool and garden are beautiful and you are able to use the larger pool of the Dutch house opposite.
Tuktuk in to Galle 200 rupees. Or a 15 minute walk - downhill going in, uphill coming home.
Bar was excellent - cocktails about 1000 and beer 350 rupees.
I mention all these as you can't find that information anywhere else.
Free good wifi,
All in all a great first 2 night stop for our trip.

Room Tip: Dumas and araliya both very good.

Best Bar None

If there is one reason to fly 11 hours to Sri Lanka then drive 2 more to Galle it is to have a passion fruit margharita made by Anil at Dick's Bar at the Sun House (there is another similarly charming barman, name forgotten, who cocktails are within a twist of lime of this genius). Couple of these then dinner on the beautiful terrace and all seems well with the world (and that was with Donald Trump picking up a couple of states).
And the Cinnamon suite is gorgeous.

Room Tip: Cinnamon suite lovely but no air con. other rooms do I believe. Every room quiet.

A very beautiful intimate hotel
Bee T [TA], , Oxford, United Kingdom

We just spent an absolutely wonderful week at the Sun House. This beautiful oasis of calm, away from the chaos of Galle, is a gem of a place. It's true that the house is rather shabby and in need of some attention …. but we weren't too bothered by this. We were in the Dumas Suite - which has a lovely spacious bathroom, a pretty bedroom area and a separate area with an old Portuguese chaise longue and a desk. This suite is well air conditioned and sufficiently separate from other hotel areas to afford good privacy. We found the food to be of variable standard. For the first few nights it was excellent - Then the chef was taken to the Taprobane Island villa to cater for a wedding and the standard dropped. In fact we felt we ate the same fish curry for three nights running (despite requesting something different) The staff at this hotel are all utterly charming - and very attentive in a discreet way….. which makes for a very relaxing atmosphere. Dick's Bar is great fun …. and we had several entertaining evenings there. (stunning cocktail list )

Room Tip: Choose the Dumas Suite for air con and privacy

Carry on Colonial!

Another throwback to the days of Tea Moguls! This is a lovely old house with pretty views, nicely planted but could use a big sprucing up. We had a great time here but it was tired, and the food was mediocre at best. It is interesting to see how the colonials lived in what was formerly Ceylon. We did not see any rooms but the public spaces certainly needed a face lift.

Room Tip: We only had lunch here so can not comment on rooms.

Only had our meals here - stayed at the Dutch House
NandPH [TA], , London, United Kingdom

As we were staying at the Dutch House we can not give a fair review of rooms etc. However from a purely subjective view point we were glad to be staying there. Our reasons were that we felt the Sun House to be too busy and the whole place felt claustrophobic by comparison. We wanted to relax in the sun by the pool and the gardens were very cramped by the frangipani trees and the pool area was very small and not sunny. If you are staying and wish to sightsee all day -then no problems.
As previously mentioned,we had to eat our evening meals at the Sun House. The bar and the dining area provide are delightful but felt the kitchen was resting on it's laurels.
We really enjoyed the whole experience on our first night, but after that we were very disappointed to find that there was very little variation in the menu giving us the feeling that it was done to save money and make the kichen's life easy. We hope that we were just unlucky and have got our feelings wrong.
It is another unique boutique hotel and would encourage everyone to eat a dinner and consider staying there if they can not afford the Dutch House

Great hotel, very comfortable with a sense of history
MarcoMich... [TA], , Sydney, Australia

We were a group of 4 (2 couples) and we all loved the Sun House.

It has lots of colonial charm and is beautifully renovated, with good facilities.

We ate several meals there and they were all good, from the traditional Sri Lankan curry to western food. It is not in the Fort precinct, but that did not worry us as we wanted to do plenty of walking to wear off all the good food. I imagine that it would only have been a few hundred rupees in a tuk tuk in any event.

We had some great cocktails.

It was a great find and I would happily go back.

Lovely intimate hotel
GoldenGap... [TA], , London

Small boutique hotel - with an intimate house party feel on the outskirts of Galle - the Fort is a short tuk tuk or 15 mins walk away. Everybody is very helpful and eager to make your stay happy. The room that we had particularly booked was not available on arrival was not available because the previous guests had refused to vacate it for us - the hotel seemed to have mixed things. They did give us a superior room although this was no bigger than ours and meant my adult daughter slept on a small cot but we then had to change again for the last 3 nights. They did offer us free dinner as a compensation which was very nice - Sri Lankan curry. Our booked room was the only twin (apparently only couples stay there?) with twin four posters and nets. Very nicely furnished and our room was the only one that led onto the courtyard which was very nice. We were told our breakfast was only the continental one and only found out it could have had eggs when we checked out. They have a set menu each night for 3,000 rupees each (£15). We went at Christmas and the Christmas menu was turkey dinner (!) so we went out to the town for dinner (recommend Fort Printers or Galle Fort). No room safes which was a nuisance and should be installed. No coffee making facilities or mini fridges either. Bottled water on request. Wi-Fi was good. The bar was rather deserted - even at Christmas when full. But overall we loved the atmosphere and feel.

Room Tip: We had the parrotfish room which was twin beds - very nice and roomy
