Lovely Architecture & Decor
kimasabi [TA], ,

We stayed here at in the Ballroom for a couple of nights finishing off our Sri Lanka visit. This boutique hotel is amazing! Just lovely. The staff - especially the manager - was super friendly and accommodating and really treated us like royalty.
The grounds are amazing. Infinity pool and all. The decor...just spectacular with amazing taste. Of all the places we visited in Sri Lanka, Galle is definitely our favorite place. Great beaches and lots of places to walk around for a visit.
We had dinner at the sister hotel right across the street - The Sun House - which was just as amazing.
AND, to top it all off, we had a private island lunch on an island - Taprobane - which was too die for. Southern most place...private place all to ourselves.

This historic building was the perfect setting for a night in the Galle area. Its abundance in history, its authentic existence and the wonderful staff transports you to the first years of this villa. Loved every second. Thank you!

We recently stayed at the Dutch House for 3 nights. From the moment we arrived, it was like being transported to another era. We stayed in the Blue Room which was beautiful, charming and huge .. but having seen the VOC suite at check-out - we'd opt for this if we stay again - it's lighter and the layout is a little easier to navigate.

I agree with the previous poster about small improvements - the towels could be updated and also an extra lamp here and there - especially in the Blue Room - it was exceptionally dark but other than that, we loved it.

Tuk tuks are available at the gate so it's easy to go into Galle.

The staff here were lovely and genuine - we felt well looked after and Priyantha, whom I think is the Manager, was so efficient - nothing was too much trouble for him.

(On our first night, we ate at the Sun House - the sister property but unfortunately didn't rate that at all. I don't know if there was a staff / chef shortage but the food was awful .. and very expensive).

Room Tip: All rooms are different, The Blue Room was stunning but as per my review, we'd opt for the slig...

Disappointing

We choose to stay at the Dutch House following trip advisor reviews and numerous recommendations in guide books .Sadly, it did not meet our expectations.

Service standards were poor compared to other boutique hotels we used on our stay in Sri Lanka. Once a person i presumed to be the manager showed us to our room we were left to our own devices. There was no information in the room which meant we had to seek out one of the two members of staff for all the rudiments of our stay, i.e wifi code, pads for pool loungers, towels for the pool , meal times etc. Throughout our stay no one offered us anything such as a cool drink or even enquired if we needed anything. In fact ,other than serving breakfast and enquiring whether we wanted lunch or dinner there was no interaction. The staff had a general air of indifference.

The room itself was tired. Flaking paint, frayed bathmats, cheap amenities, sparking electrical adaptors, bulbs missing in lamps and a furiously noisy airconditioning unit. There was no in room safe and the windows contained no glass. With the blinds requiring to remain shut to benefit from the airconditioning and attempt to keep out mosquitoes the room was gloomy.

The pool furniture was either dilapitated or recently renewed. The latter was made from roughsawn wood. There was only one umbrella offering shade.

We used the bar and restaurant in the adjacent sister property once. The bar was full of a noisy unwelcoming group, possibly expats, which necessitated sitting in the courtyard. When the barman brought our drinks one tumbled to the floor due to an broken tabletop . Despite reserving our table and being shown the menu on arrival the waiters attention was taken up with the large group and after waiting to be shown to our table, we gave up and found the waiter ourselves.A person who i believed was the owner was in the courtyard but made no attempt to enquire whether we were enjoying our stay or indeed even acknowledge us.

In contrast, the day of our departure a new party of guests arrived. Staff multiplied and came out of the woodwork. Garden furniture was rearranged, unseen pads appeared and we were asked by the returning manager if we had ordered our breakfast. In fact we had not, but we took this as a cue to hurry up as the party which had arrived en masse and camped on the verandah clearly wanted our room. In fact the staff attempted to change the bedclothes in our room before we had even finished breakfast.

This is a grand old dame of boutique hotels but at $320 a night it is tired and in immediate need of care, attention and intrusive management oversight. What a shame.

Bags of charm, but would benefit from small improvements.

A really beautiful old Dutch house that ouses charm. The gardens, swimming pool and general feeling of peace and relaxation were it's high points together with good service and a garden full of birds, animals and not seen before shy monkeys together with the lovely rooms. We had the Ballroom and would certainly recommend it as we thought it was the best. Unfortunately there was an underlying feeling that the neighbouring Sun House was getting more of the owners attention - especially in little details ie - only enough hot water for one shower, towels in the room that were well past there use by date, paying extra for fruit juice at breakfast and some of the garden and pool furniture needed replacing. Yes,maybe just inexpensive niggles, but enough to let it down. However we would definitely recommend this property.
Regarding the sister property the Sun House, where you have to eat dinner - see separate review.

Room Tip: Ballroom is a must.

Relaxing old style

We had 4 nights at the Dutch House and really enjoyed it's relaxing, low key, old style charm. You feel are staying as a guest in someone's house. The breakfasts were great, and the rooms quirky and charming. Being able to walk across the road to the Sun House for drinks and dinner is ideal.

Wonderful & Serene.

Travelled as a family of 3 over Christmas 2015/16. This hotel ended ut 2.5 week travels around Sri Lanka and was a wonderful full stop to the trip. Our room was amazing (Blue) especially the bathroom. The staff were sweet and attentive. Best toasted cheese and tomato sandwich i have ever had and the mango martini was sublime. We ate breakfast and lunch at the dutch house and had our evening meal at the property next door (Sun House) which was quite buzzy as it had a wedding party in. The garden and pool at The Dutch House are lovely. A very nice touch, given its 10 minutes from the old town) is how easy it is to get them to arrange for a hotel friendly tuk tuk to take you to town - we have stayed in other villas away from town that charge a ransom to get you anywhere. This place is not cheap but when you are there you can see why and we managed to successfully convince ourselves we were worth it :)

Room Tip: All seem premium (we had a peek) but I think Blue Room nudged it.

Timeless luxury
lahlahlo [TA], , Singapore, Singapore

Two adult family couples, we stayed in the Ball Suite and the Blue Suite, the two large end-cap suites that are closest to the cricket field and pool. As there were no other guests during our stay, we essentially had the entire property to ourselves and it was nothing short of amazing.

With breakfast on the veranda each morning, and tea in the library/living room each evening before bed, staying here allows the guest to feel quite at home.

We had one dinner at the Sun House across the way, which was very good. The benefit of a well-stocked (quality) of wines was a treat.

Why stay here? There is a simple luxury here in a well-built, well-renovated house from 300 years ago. The architecture and the decor are extremely pleasing and relaxing.

The staff here were great, essentially visible and welcoming when needed, otherwise staying somewhere else. The manager was efficient and friendly, welcoming us at the start of our stay and seeing us off at the end. We had his card if needed, however, everything was in order. The Dutch House strikes just the right balance of service in my opinion.

Room Tip: the Blue room and Ball room both had nice seating areas and large bathrooms.

Complete treat
P R [TA], , Sydney, Australia

We stayed 3 nights at the Dutch house. The whole experience was one of tranquility. The Dutch house eggs are amazingly good . We walked across the road to the sun house for some meals as both properties owned by same owner. The cooking in the kitchen at the sun house was delicious.
If anyone knows how to make their cinnamon scrub, please let me know!
All in all it was so fabulous we were reluctant to leave the Dutch house to see Galle.

Sublime

Staying at the Dutch House is like sleeping in a museum/art gallery. The place is tastefully decorated with antique furniture and modern art works which create rooms which are a work of art. Mod cons such as televisions and halogen lighting are replaced by bookshelves, antique maps and lamps creating an ambience of yesteryear. The four poster bed with mosquito nets is extremely comfortable and the bathroom with huge bath tub and two hand basins is larger than most hotel rooms. The manicured lawn leads down to the infinity edged pool which is spotlessly clean and perfect for swimming laps or just lounging on one if the deck chairs. The verandah is furnished with day beds and tables where the fabulous breakfast is served. I recommend the traditional Sri Lankan breakfast but everything we tried was delicious. Service was unobtrusive but always friendly and helpful. The Dutch House only has four rooms so it feels like a private house and is extremely peaceful and relaxing. It is as close to perfection in a boutique hotel I have ever experienced.
