An unexpected Singalese New Year-celebration
Inge M [TA], ,

I spend the evening here during Singalese New Year. The kitchen was unfortunately closed the time we arrived, but according to the Singalese tradition they offered us free New Year-food. It was very delicious: the milkrice, kalu dodol (it's like a pudding made of riceflour), kokki's. We left the place full and satisfied. The place itself is pretty: white spacious architecture with a lot of food and a sunterrace with a great seaview.

Best mixed fruit juice in town

Mostly everyday we had our lunch in this fantastic situated Restaurant with best beach and sea view! The Food was very tasty and the mixed fruit juice a dream, but don't eat the wooden fired Pizza, they need a lot of improvement....

Hit a poor one this time
John B [TA], , Bristol, United Kingdom

Thought it would make a change to stay on the coast but bog mistake!! The whole area is poor, a bit like Blackpool or Torquay in the UK, nowhere would have been good to stay. Although pretty clean it was decidedly downmarket and limited facilities. Limited towels provided, poor quality furniture and fittings, a D-I-Y feeling about it and noisy - Sea too close, no double glazing, road too close, staff too noisy, guests too noisy. To make it worse we came across some stunning boutique guest houses and hotels in Galle the next day which is right next door to Unawatuna! Wasn't cheap either.

Room Tip: don't go there

Nice place for a Family Outing
Chryshan... [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

The whole family really enjoyed the stay. It is right by the Ocean, which is about 10 meters away. The beach is full of seashells, which the kids really enjoyed collecting. We stayed in a room on the ground floor, which was very spacious, and the bed was very comfy.

Relaxing hotel away from the busy Unawatuna 'strip'
aecscott [TA], , London, United Kingdom

We had a very peaceful and relaxing time during our two night stay here. The hotel is beautifully done with clean, basic rooms with your own seating area on the balcony (we had a room on the 1st floor). The beach has changed drastically in the last 6 months as sand has been added to increase the size of the beach meaning the hotel doesn't sit 'in' the water as seen in photos, but rather it is on the beach. This was great for us as it meant you could lie on the beach and swim without being near loads of people. We felt like we were on our own private beach! The staff were very friendly and made us feel very at home. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

Excellent hotel in Unawatuna
Kira K [TA], , Brussels, Belgium

We had a great time at Sun'n'Sea - our base for the Unawatuna part of our Sri Lankan holiday. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the on-site restaurant had great food, amazing views and a very nice chilled atmosphere - just what we needed after day-long beach and sea adventures (diving with one of the nearby dive centres). Having the beach just at the doorstop is simply amazing and makes for a very relaxing holiday.

Our home away from home

We came to Sun N Sea after a 4 day roundtrip in Sri Lanka. Have been here several times over the last 15 years and many things have changed, but still the hotel has the same calm feeling. Walking through the reception and seeing and hearing the sea is magical every time. The staff is very service minded and friendly and makes you feel at home the moment you arrive.
This time we were a group of 15 persons (family and friends) and we occupied 7 rooms at the hotel.
ROOMS: The rooms are clean and air-conditioned, have comfortable beds, fan and mosquito nets. There are 2 room categories, downstairs room (big-doubles) and upper floor rooms (smaller doubles). In addition there is one big family room in upper floor.
All the upper floor rooms are accessed from the beautiful wooden balcony which is also a nice place to sit and relax if your skin needs a little rest from the sun...
Rooms are kept clean and new towels provide daily.
LOCATION: The Unawatuna Beach is unfortunately not the same as it was before and this made me personally very sad. Unawatuna beach has been suffering from erosion for years and it was accelerating after a break water at the opposite end of the beach was built. What I would call a "quick fix" was performed by the Coast Conservation in March 2015. They filled up the beach with new sand on the whole of Unawatuna beach. The problem is that it is a different and darker sand and that they also filled up areas that had no sand originally(like in the front of Sun N Sea). For us having been here before this was very disappointing, but for the other members of our group they liked the fact that the beach was now right in front of the rooms and with sun beds and room for beach activities, ball games, racket ball etc.
I hope and believe that nature and the natural sea currents will again bring back the beach to what it was outside Sun N Sea. We already saw proof that this is the case.
FOOD: Since last time we were here Sun N Sea has opened a Grill/Bistro additionally to the excellent kitchen they already have. It is located over the bar and has a wood-fired Pizza oven. We have always loved the food at Sun N Sea, specially the Seafood and curry, but the new Grill/Bistro with pizzas and bruschetta was very welcome by our younger group-members. As a result, for the 10 days we stayed, we only had 2 meals (lunches) outside the hotel.

Beautiful boutique hotel
Zara K [TA], ,

Came here as a big group for a family holiday, and the hotel was just beautiful, peaceful, picturesque, clean and the staff were very helpful and attentive. Breakfast on the veranda overlooking the beach was worth waking up for and the hotel is a bargain for the price. Will definitely be back and have recommended to family and friends

Location, location, location and more location.

The hotel is situated on what feels like its own private stretch of Unawatuna beach. All the rooms front onto the beach with direct access from the outside lounging area onto the beach and their sun loungers. The staff are friendly, there is a very decent on site restaurant and the rooms are large and simply yet very tastefully finished. The only downside is the noise. The hotel is situated on a corner and whilst fronted by direct access to the beach, to the rear is the very busy main road. Also being as close to the beach as it is, there is a bit of noise at might with people staying late (or starting early!) All in all, a fabulously located hotel with excellent amenities that would not be far from perfect with a better quality of sleep.

really comfortable and pleasant stay
MisterPet [TA], , London, United Kingdom

friendly and helpful staff made this stay very chilled and relaxing. Food was lovely and if you wanted anything off menu or done differently they would accommodate. Good location at the end of the beach because the centre can be a bit loud in the evenings. Would stay here again.

Fantastic and Friendly Stay

We stayed at Sun 'n' Sea with a group of friends over New Year and had an excellent 7 nights. The hotel is set at the quiet end of Unawatuna Beach, but still only a 5 minute walk (or 150 rupee tuc tuc) to the main 'strip' of restaurants and bars. Being a bit further out, we were able to enjoy an area of beach right outside the hotel which never got busy and almost felt like it was private to the hotel. As previous reviews have mentioned, the hotel is literally set right on the ocean front, providing amazing views and relaxing sounds of the waves (it's worth mentioning that all the rooms face out to the ocean, so the sound of the waves will fill the room at night. We found this soothing but maybe not for everyone if you're a light sleeper!). Upon arrival the staff were extremely welcoming and showed us around the hotel and to our room. The rooms are basic, with little storage space and no hanging space being the main issue for stays longer than a couple of nights. Aside from this the bed was comfortable and came with a mosquito net, and the bathroom was adequate with a shower, wash basin, mirror and toilet. It's worth noting that the rooms are cleaned and bins emptied upon request only (we found this out after the mountain of water bottles in our bin started to take over the room after a few nights!).

After staying in several hotels in Sri Lanka, the food at Sun n Sea is definitely worth highlighting, it's excellent! The inclusive breakfast is cooked to order, and the evening menu was faultless. Between our group we particular enjoyed the spicy calamari to start and a combination of the Sri Lankan curry and rice and wood fired pizza's for main.

All in all, we would definitely recommend Sun n Sea for anyone planning a trip to Sri Lanka's south coast!

Tasteful Boutique Hotel
Girasol20... [TA], , Singapore, Singapore

We stayed here for 1 night during our SriLanka roundtrip and it was one of our best stays. The property and rooms are very tasteful designed. We had a ground-floor unit which was big and accommodated the 3 of us. Unfortunately the single bed didn't have a mosquito-net, which was a no go since I got bitten like crazy.
Breakfast was great - nice plate with fresh fruits and dinner was delicious as well.
I would certainly come back to this place and can highly recommend it.

Room Tip: make sure you have a mosquito-net
