We stayed at Sun 'n' Sea with a group of friends over New Year and had an excellent 7 nights. The hotel is set at the quiet end of Unawatuna Beach, but still only a 5 minute walk (or 150 rupee tuc tuc) to the main 'strip' of restaurants and bars. Being a bit further out, we were able to enjoy an area of beach right outside the hotel which never got busy and almost felt like it was private to the hotel. As previous reviews have mentioned, the hotel is literally set right on the ocean front, providing amazing views and relaxing sounds of the waves (it's worth mentioning that all the rooms face out to the ocean, so the sound of the waves will fill the room at night. We found this soothing but maybe not for everyone if you're a light sleeper!). Upon arrival the staff were extremely welcoming and showed us around the hotel and to our room. The rooms are basic, with little storage space and no hanging space being the main issue for stays longer than a couple of nights. Aside from this the bed was comfortable and came with a mosquito net, and the bathroom was adequate with a shower, wash basin, mirror and toilet. It's worth noting that the rooms are cleaned and bins emptied upon request only (we found this out after the mountain of water bottles in our bin started to take over the room after a few nights!).
After staying in several hotels in Sri Lanka, the food at Sun n Sea is definitely worth highlighting, it's excellent! The inclusive breakfast is cooked to order, and the evening menu was faultless. Between our group we particular enjoyed the spicy calamari to start and a combination of the Sri Lankan curry and rice and wood fired pizza's for main.
All in all, we would definitely recommend Sun n Sea for anyone planning a trip to Sri Lanka's south coast!
