A little piece of Heaven on the beautiful West coast

Taru Rock Villa, Bentota “A little piece of Heaven on the beautiful West coast”
What an amazing place to stay – a truly sublime experience!
A small family owned and managed Villa, including four delightful deluxe double rooms and a large adjoining family villa, all nestled in beautiful grounds, which are simply stunning, with swimming pool, restaurant and bar area.
The Villas are managed by Oshan, who is the perfect host and a mild mannered, serene gentleman, ably assisted by Nimal, a gentleman with great knowledge and wit, who takes care of the restaurant and bar with his offsider, Ruwan.
What a great team! All three made our stay an absolute delight.
The rooms are impeccable. Beautifully decorated, clean, very well maintained, with a comfortable bed and excellent bathroom. The attention to detail and interior design flows though whole Villa complex and is all done to a very high standard.
Without a doubt the highlight of the Villa is the restaurant area. Again, a lovely ambience by the pool and very well maintained, but the food is the star, it’s just amazing! A very varied menu with something for everyone, all the food is prepared to a very high standard and tastes wonderful.
We stayed for a week and were going to eat in a few different places along the beach, but the quality and price of the food offered at the Villa is second to none. We dined every night at the Villa and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
Our stay at the Villa was to celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday and as a treat the management and staff prepared us a special candlelit dinner on the gazebo in the garden, complete with a surprise birthday cake!
Taru Rock Villa is a delightful place to stay, with excellent staff and serving stunning food in a tranquil oasis.
Highly recommend definitely seems inadequate to describe a stay here. It is excellent!

Perfect boutique hotel

It's difficult to summarise this amazing hotel, it's staff and the Rock Villa experience. The hotel itself has 4 rooms and 1 suite and from the moment you arrive the service is simply somethings else from the iced lolly and huge smiles on arrival, to the anytime you want breakfast, lunch or dinner. Drinks, teas or coffees are served in the lanai or poolside or even taken down to the beach for you - nothing is any trouble. The beach is at the end of the garden and a further leisurely 50m walk takes you through the mangroves to the private beach. The Villa provides loungers at the beach for you and will make up cool bags as well if you want. G&T's at sunset. Even poolside at the Villa you can listen to the waves on the beach - just perfect. There's even security at the beach just to keep your valuables safe when you are in the sea.

The buildings have been renovated to a high standard throughout, and are tastefully furnished. Rooms 1 and 4 both have private porch areas as does the suite. A/C in the rooms is first class.

The whole area is spotlessly clean. Lovely crisp white sheets and soft towels etc in your room, ample pool loungers and a lovely poolside area, and beautifully maintained gardens. We couldn't fault it.

Then there's the food.

You would think that in a small facility catering for 12 or so guests that the food might be average or limited, in fact the food is exceptional.

Whether it's the seafood platters and lobsters, or if you are lucky enough to share a BBQ it's all first class. The choice off the main menus for lunch and dinner will offer something for everyone and all meals are prepared and presented to a very high standard - again nothing is a problem even coping with multiple food allergies so our daughter didn't even recognise she had slightly different food.

We were fortunate enough to be here during Sri Lankan New Year and share a traditional New Year breakfast with the hotel staff - they had gone out of their way to include the guests and make the whole experience thoroughly memorable.

The Taru group take customer service very seriously when we were there for 3 nights a lady from H/O was down from Colombo checking standards, tasting food speaking to guests to make sure everything was as it should be be and told us that all the Taru sites get a regular visit. They are very proud of their reputation, and it's thoroughly well deserved.

It may be a little more expensive than many beach hotels in Bentota but worth every penny. Thank you for memorable few days.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, if you want a private porch opt for either room 1 or 4.

Stunning boutique hotel on the perfect stretch of beach

Rock Villa is really, really beautiful - much more so than the website photos suggest. Service is impeccable: softly spoken, smiling and attentive (never intrusive) staff who make it impossible to do anything but relax. We stayed for 5 nights and barely saw any other guests, so it felt like having our own enormous private villa.

The standout here is the food - the best we had anywhere in Sri Lanka, with a fantastic range of options (Western and Sri Lankan) and very reasonably priced (though not 'cheap'). The chef is simply brilliant! Breakfast happens whenever you're up and there's an extensive menu throughout the day (order whatever you fancy and it'll be ready in around 20 minutes, either in the restaurant, by the pool or even on the beach), and a further three set-menu options, plus various specials for dinner. We didn't bother trying anywhere else in Bentota.

The hotel is situated on what we felt was the best bit of beach - further north past the rocks was far more crowded, and the hotel staff do a great job raking the sand and keeping it clean. There's a fair bit of litter that washes up on other stretches of beach. We loved crossing the railway track at the end of the garden to get to the sand. Don't worry about noise from the trains - they only pass every half-hour or so and we couldn't hear them at all from our room.

We stayed in the most basic room and it was spacious, well-lit, air-con worked well and water pressure was strong, v comfortable super-king-sized bed, room cleaned at least twice per day, 2 large bottles of water replenished every day. One tiny niggle - the extra charge for in-room wi-fi (it's free in the restaurant/pool area and the lounge). If the hotel reads these comments - please make wi-fi freely available in the rooms! We didn't encounter in-room charges anywhere else during our travels around Sri Lanka.

Outstanding Experience

We stayed at Rock Villa for 6 days of perfection! The food, the service, the rooms and the location were all 10/10. We arrived feeling stressed and travel worn and left feeling fully rejuvenated. Highly recommended to all that want an experience of a lifetime.

This is boutique size, just half a dozen rooms. This is a superbly run hotel separated from the west coast by a well-kept garden, swimming pool and a railway line. It has a very good restaurant that's very flexible (I think that breakfast is served whenever you want it). All of the staff are unbelievably hard-working and almost psychic. Special mention to Nimal and Nuwan, and the manager, Oshan.

If we could live here, we would. Ask us anything about this great place.

The ultimate in small hotel pampering

We are just completing our first visit to Sri Lanka and it has been great, this is our first experience of small boutique hotels and it has spoilt us for the future. We have stayed at six during our three week stay and they have all been excellent. The Rock Villa at Bentota has five rooms and twenty one staff to look after their guests and boy do you get looked after. Their philosophy is that their guests come first in everthing and they put this into practice every minute of the day. The rooms are tastefully decorated, the food is wonderful, the location next to the beach perfect and the whole atmosphere reeks of tranquil relaxation. Its not the place to come if you want an action packed stay but if you just want to relax you will find it hard to better.

The beautiful Rock Villa hotel

Another amazing place, surrounded by beauty with the most delicious food, not just
B & B, lunch and evening food also served. Comfortable beds, all very very clean. Very close to the turtle project, an experience not to miss. Lovely beach, great service, don't miss the chance to stay here. Beach at the end of the garden only you've crossed the railway, don't let that put you off, it's right and not intrusiv.

Blissful, relaxing oasis - they could teach many so-called five star hotels a thing or two!

We stayed just two nights at the Rock Villa and I really wish we had had longer! I absolutely fell in love with the place. Beautiful, serene white villas (there's only a handful of rooms), an open terrace by the pool, a garden filled with coconut palms and slung with inviting hammocks, a short stroll to a lovely clean, quiet beach ... If you're looking for somewhere to unwind, indulge, relax, you've found it.

Highlights for me were:

1. The gardens and pool area - beautifully maintained, surrounded by frangipani trees that are hung with lanterns at night, so romantic. It's so quiet that the wildlife comes up close - we saw dragonflies and kingfishers, chipmunks and mynah birds. There are comfy sunbeds for all guests and food and drinks available all day from the terrace bar/restaurant. The pool is a nice depth and temperature - great for cooling off after a sunbathing spree. At night, it was great to laze on the terrace after dinner, drinking cocktails or a cup of tea (tea and coffee are free all day) and playing board games from their well-stocked games cupboard, or just chatting.

2. The food was exceptionally good, especially the Sri Lankan dishes. In fact, it was some of the best we ate on our whole trip. The rice and curry was fabulous and one evening we had a whole baked mullet with spices, rice and salads, which was worthy of an expensive restaurant (but only cost 4500 rupees for two, about £25). The homemade treacle ice cream with candied cashews is divine. We intended to go exploring up the beach for other restaurants, but in the end we didn't bother: it was just too good!

3. The room itself - we had the cheapest option (deluxe) but it was lovely; a big comfy bed, spacious bathroom with walk-in shower, lots of soft fluffy towels and nice amenities. They'll even bring you a drying rack for your wet swim things. The bedroom is also freshened up twice daily, once during breakfast and again for the evening turndown. We slept really well both nights.

4. The service - because the place is so small, you can really do things your own way. There's no set time for breakfast or lunch; for dinner, you just need to order it in the afternoon, again for whenever you fancy it. You can have it on the terrace or in your room. You can order drinks or snacks wherever, whenever - including down to the beach. Nothing is too much trouble.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for the ultimate relaxing escape from it all. It would be a lovely honeymoon spot. But don't go if you want lots of bars or nightlife nearby; you can walk to some nearby hotels via the beach, but that's about it! Also, if you've got young kids, be aware you need to cross a (very quiet) railway line to get to the beach.

My only tiny quibbles (in case the management read this) are that the coffee isn't great - please buy an espresso machine!! - and that it would be great to have more Sri Lankan options for breakfast eg hoppers. However, we would most definitely come back and stay for longer next time!

Lastly: If you're deliberating between spending nights in Galle or Bentota, as we did, I'd recommend just staying in Bentota and doing a day trip to Galle - we felt that was plenty.

We loved this place

My wife and I plus our 19 year old son spent a week here and had a lovely time. The room was spacious and clean and the swimming pool such a perfect place to relax and unwind beside. If I had any complaints it would be that the service in the restaurant could be a little erratic not helped by staff not always appreciating the subtleties of English. Nevertheless, Now we are back home I have to say I miss the place!

Exceptional stay

After 6 weeks away, this was the last hotel on the end of our trip, and it was by far the best.

The hotel is in the grounds of a beautiful colonial house that has been renovated, with some additional rooms included. Everything has been built to the highest standard and tastefully decorated.

The location is perfect, close to the beach but set back to be peaceful. The food is fabulous, and the cocktails were great value too.

But the best part of the stay was the service: every single staff member was polite, courteous and helpful - always going the extra mile and happy to help you with anything.

We really enjoyed our stay here and it was by far the best place we stayed on our whole trip. Highly recommended.

Perfection in Bentota

Rock Villa is perfection. The staff are warm, welcoming and provided the highest standard of service. From the welcome at our arrival through our check out we were made to feel like nothing else mattered except making our stay the best possible. They succeeded in all aspects. Food is the best I've experienced in Sri Lanka. The buildings and garden are beautifully designed and meticulously maintained. The staff are warm, welcoming and provided the highest standard of service. Food is the best I've experienced in Sri Lanka. Part of the group stayed in the walauwa. This residence has been beautifully restored and has a large veranda with views of the garden and pool area. A well equipped kitchen staffed by a private butler , and large dining area make this a perfect setting for private meals. There are two large bedrooms with attached baths. I can't think of any way that this place could be improved upon-it's truly perfection!

Room Tip: All rooms are spacious, beautifully appointed ,and very comfortable. The walauwa is amazing.
