We checked in for two nights and stayed four. .... an intimate hotel with six rooms; great staff, truly exceptional customer service; good location; really cool architecture (apparently it was originally a private home designed by a Portuguese man); very comfortable bed, spacious room, nice bath and shower; swimming pool downstairs and 'jacuzzi' on second floor; lots of trees, very quiet; good breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs etc., be sure to have the curd; no plastic anywhere - this hotel take its commitment to being green seriously. Re location, we walked into downtown - it took about 25 minutes, by tuk tuk it only takes about ten. It is very close to large parks, walking distance to shopping and the Independence Monument. There is a supermarket 2 minute away (on foot).

Room Tip: I think every room is quiet - it is at the end of a cul-de-sac.

There is something very special about this hotel that grows on you the longer you stay. From the welcoming charm of Nuwani the smiling front of house manager to the constant hellos and hi 5s from all the staff, the hotel is located smack bang in the middle of calm- watered Unawatuna Beach. There is no need for a pool as you are metres from the beach. The north end of the beach is the calmest part to swim and gets very atmospheric with the hoards of locals who tend to swim this end when the day gets hotter. The Sri Lankan breakfasts are amazing and extra portions were never a problem. The penthouse rooms #11 & # 12 are the biggest and offer the best views of the beach as well as lots of privacy. The water pressure of the showers when everyone else is having a shower is comical as only a trickle appears at times. But who cares really! You have to remember that this country is only coming out of decades of civil war and the effects of the 2004 tsunami so miminal water pressure is only a minimal issue.

Room Tip: Penthouse room #11has less obstructed views than room # 12

Er stayed 5 days in this beautiful hotel, and we could not have wished for more. The beach was great, also for children, not very many people.

The hotel staff were extremely serviceminded and helpfull. Also the food was great, home cooked, mainly local, but with a twist so there was something for everyone, also children.

We took a few sail trips to snorkel, and Pigion Island were the best.

This is the second time i have been to this hotel (never done that before) and it was even better than the last time. Lovely refurbished room right on the beach. The breakfast is good but the evening meals are excellent. But its the staff that really make this hotel what it is. Always smiling and will go out of their way to help. Cant fault it at all.

A return visit after five years with heart in mouth. Unawatuna has changed, will the Flower Garden have changed too? The answer, yes, we have a new swimming pool and restaurant area but the service and food is just as wonderful as ever. The place never feels crowded, there is a sensation of space and the service is super attentive. Thank you Sassi and all your staff for a wonderful stay

A hotel with a great swimming pool.
And the morning bird watching is a must.
The room is not too tidy, but just about worth the price.
It is just a nice place to chill out and enjoy the fresh air.
Recommended for all kinds of travelers.

This hotel is an amazing place to stay, the staff is excellent the views are amazing it's a very old world feel to staying in a modern day Sri Lanka. I will say, for the price of this place, somethings should be updated like towels and sheets. There is a driver waiting to take you into town if you want to go to the fort or to the local shopping area. There is one man with no legs who drives a tuk tuk that waits outside and he is one of the nicest humans I've ever met. All the staff was great. Overall excellent experience

A wedding was held in Sri Lanka and Thambapanni Pavillion/Retreat was the chosen destination for the wedding and accommodation. The Customer service was excellent as well as the beauty of the hotels. My overall happiness of the time stayed was most certainly met.

Room Tip: choose one of the four from rooms closest to the beach, either top or bottom both are amazing.

Prior to arrival, booking was very very easy. I had good communication with the owner, Lalith about prices and pick ups. There was a hiccup with the pick up, but that was sorted quickly.

We arrived very early in the morning so we were allowed a sleep in a spare room, before being transferred to another, better room. The rooms were very basic with a bed, a desk, a wardrobe and bathroom, but with the location, you won't do much except sleep in there anyway.

The location is what you pay for. Yes it may be a bit more pricey than other places, but the location is extremely central on the beach, with great surf for surfing and bodyboarding, it is right in the centre of the strip for restaurants and bars, and next to 3/4 surf rental shops.

The staff were fantastic, special praise for Didula the barman and restaurant worker who catered to our every need and was always smiling and up for a chat. Kris, the owners brother, was also amazing and took us to lots of different places in his car and tuktuk, he will help you out and show you places and be your own personal tour guide for a very small price!

Overall, we will return for sure, just for the location and the staff. Excellent hotel.

The only reasons it hasn't got 5* is for a) the Internet is quite tempremental and sometimes cuts out, b) while we were there (5nights), the restaurant only had one special, so there were better places to eat, and c) the rooms are very close together with thin doors/walls - when people wake up early or staff begin work early, you hear them and get woken up fairly early!

Room Tip: Room 18 was great, close to pool, bar, restaurant and beach (all within 10m), and there are two exce...

Maybe our expectations were a little high given the price, but we were disappointed with the room and the facilities at Thambapanni. We stayed there only one night, in a large room in the satellite building (across the road).

Very spacious but nearly devoid of any amenities. The airconditioning next to the bed barely covered the large room, the TV had three channels working and the bathroom had three towels for two people. The breakfast was passable and wi-fi doesn't really work in the rooms.

As with most resorts in Sri Lanka, the service was friendly and high standard. No complaints on that front. But the management is definitely aiming for a backpacker feel for a decidedly non-backpacker price.

One other disappointment - hotels in Sri Lanka are required to provide free accommodation for taxi drivers. Thambapanni's was apparently too small for the number of guests they had, so our driver had to sleep in the car, which isn't on at all.
