This luxurious, comfortable, spacious modern villa, designed by a student of the famous architect Geoffrey Bawa is set in a secluded lush tropical garden with a private swimming pool in a quiet residential area in the village of Unawatuna. The villa has been designed with "keeping cool" in mind in this hot climate. The high ceilings and many french doors from all rooms ensure a constant cooling air flow throughout the villa.
The villa is tastefully decorated with a mix of Sri Lankan antiques and modern furniture. All bedrooms are en-suite with hot water showers, have comfortable beds with mosquito nets and good quality bed linen. There are 2 bedrooms with double beds and one bedroom with two single beds. All rooms have Air Conditioning and fans. There is also a cot and highchair available.
Being one of the most biodiverse countries in the world the garden contains amazing palm, mango, papaya, araliya, avacado trees and boasts many different types of heliconias. The garden is frequently visited by interesting wildlife such as monkeys, different types of lizards, squirrels and many species of birds such as parakeets, paradise flycatchers, humming birds, kingfishers and the odd peacock.
The villa is approximately 5 minutes walk from the beautiful beach of Unawatuna which is safe for swimming or a 5 minute tuk tuk ride away from the quiet beaches of Dalawella and Talpe. Check with the locals to see where it is safe to swim at these beaches.
A significant place of interest nearby includes the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle which is 4km away from Shalini Villa. If you wish to go further afield (45 mins drive via new highway) and are a garden lover you may enjoy visiting Geoffrey Bawa's house and garden "Lunuganga" or his brother's house and garden - "Brief Garden".
Other enjoyable things you may like to do are body surfing or whale/dolphin watching at Mirissa beach, releasing a baby turtle into the indian ocean from the turtle farm at Habaraduwa, surfing, snorkelling or shipwreck diving in the aqua marine waters of Unawatuna, taking a catamaran trip on the scenic lakes at Koggala and visiting Cinnamon island, visiting nearby buddhist temples, taking a yoga class or relaxing massage in Unawatuna, hiring a bicycle and cycling inland amongst the paddy fields admiring the gorgeous views or you may just want to relax in the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of the villa.
Those who are interested in acquiring new culinary skills can have a private rice and curry cookery lesson at the villa. Be sure to try the delicious and unusual cashew nut, pineapple and banana flower curries.
There is a chef at the Villa to cook your meals for you if you wish. Or if you want to cook yourselves the Villa has a fully equipped modern kitchen. Alternatively you could try the many restaurants in Unawatuna, Dellwella, Talpe or Galle. There is a housekeeper at the Villa that comes daily and takes care of cleaning and gardening. Babysitting can be arranged if needed.
