My wife, 3 year old son and I stayed at the Shalini Villa last November, and it was perfect in every way! The villa itself is beautiful; a great place to while away a few relaxing hours every day before heading out to explore Unawatuna. I'd even be happy spending entire days there without going out at all. The staff is fantastic. Friendly, helpful, and what an amazing chef! Our son particularly enjoyed the monkeys that visit the trees around the villa every morning just as we finished breakfast.

I'd recommend this Villa to anyone; families with young children or teens, couples looking for a romantic getaway, small groups travelling together - all will enjoy!

One last tip - I highly recommend dinner at Kingfisher. Great nearby restaurant on the beach. Sit at a table in the sand and enjoy the freshest seafood you can get.

Imagine waking up on a lovely sunny morning, stepping out onto your private balcony and surveying the mini-jungle and pond below with birdsong, peacocks crying and the glimpse of a monkey or two. Then you go down to the open-air eating area for a delicious breakfast (many choices available). This in part describes our experience of the beautiful Dunes Hotel. The owners, Gayan and Jenny, and Roshan their elegant helper, were all so friendly and accommodating, helping us in so many ways, including packing us a lunch for our long train ride to Kandy. The location is central yet just off the main road so really quiet. A/C in the rooms and better reading lights would make it perfect. Highly recommended.

I may recommend the place. if you are looking for the tourist facilities, a lot of shops and bars that is not the place for you. That is for the nature lovers and those you prefer to meet the real local culture and try origin local food. if you wish to go somewhere as a couple to relax and enjoy yourselves that is also a good place to stay for longer.

It was a perfect choice for relaxing holidays in Sri Lanka, quiet surroundings, only nature around, few tourists in the whole Nilaveli, almost not seen. Hotel is placed near a beautiful beach. However the beach is partially full of rubbish from the sea, the hotel staff takes care about their part. Tasty breakfast, possibly not very rich for some travellers, but for this climat perfect, and always fresh with delicious choice of fresh fruit. You may order the dinner or supper, which is delicious! Local fresh cuisines served by the cheerful staff (thanks to Raja we have had a few marvellous dinners). Although the staff does not speak very good english, they are very communicative and helpful. Young Tamil guy (do not remember the name now) is a perfect match as well. He was serving us the fresh juices to the beach, and also helping us to deliver some items form the store which was in the village. Our apartment with the garden view and terrace was really spacious, clean, and with a great double bed and all necessary facilities. There is no radio nor TV what we really loved, only the nature, birds and.. monkey in the neighbor garden ;) wifi in the main area working very well. I love the patio and the garden. and your own beach is just behind the fenster :) Sam the owner takes care about her visitors, she may organize a driver (perfect idea to have a one day tours around). Raja has also organised for us the fisherman to see the Pigeon Island (love that, and that is the one of the best places I have been snorkeling so far). To Trinco city that is around half an hour by tuk tuk or bus. Easy to get there.

Nearest shop is in the village, around half an hour walk, but who cares if you are in so beautiful place ;)

Road from Colombo airport may be not very convenient, 6-8 hours by car, so take the driver or just stay somewhere in the middle for a night.

Trincomalee region is noth east coast, and that is far place to visit the whole country staying only there. I advise that to stay for relax after hiking or after visiting the south. However one day trips to Sigiriya, Dambulla or Wilpattu national park are possible if you hire the car or the driver with the car. That costs, but it is worth it, if you have a limited amount of days in Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: Garden view villa with terrace.

We recently spent a lovely week relaxing in this hotel after a couple of weeks touring the island. The hotel is very attractive, the bed super comfy, the food excellent and reasonable, the ambience friendly and relaxed and the staff all charming and really make the hotel special. The hotel's position on the beach is also lovely with great restaurant on the sands. If I had to find anything to criticise it would be that breakfast can be somewhat slow and haphazard and a buffet could be more satisfactory.

This small, boutique hotel was a little difficult to find initially as it is actually located down a laneway off Jawatta Road. Being set back from the road does mean it is lovely and quiet though – a real oasis from the madness of Colombo. Watch out for the small discrete brown sign.

The foyer area is somewhat smaller than what it appears in the photos and is a little rundown in places.

We were given Room 2, on ground level, overlooking the garden and just off the breakfast area. There is a little noise from 7am onwards as breakfast is prepared but guests eat their meal outside in the garden well away from the room. The main disadvantage of Room 2 is that the free internet does not reach this far and you must sit out in the hot foyer/library area to send emails.

The room itself though is great! It is clean, large, tiled throughout, has a king size bed and plenty of storage space. There is a bar fridge and a large safe in the wardrobe. The bathroom is compact but fully equipped with toiletries and actually has a bath! Absolute bliss!

Bottled water is replenished each day when the room is serviced.

Breakfast is served individually for each room and consists of a variety of fruit, fresh juice, toast, butter and jam, eggs, sausages, curd and treacle plus tea of course. All served with a smile!

There are two pools – one on ground level and a smaller one on the first floor with sunbeds alongside. It would be a good idea for management to supply pool towels for guests to use.

The staff are absolutely amazing – so very kind and helpful. They couldn’t do enough for us. A car to the airport was arranged with ease.

All attractions and restaurants are located only a short tuk tuk ride away – expect to be pay about 200 rupees on a metered tuk tuk. Cargills can be found about 150m away further along Jawatta Road.

I thoroughly recommend Colombo Hotel by Ceilao Villas, it was very good value for money and we can’t wait to stay there again on our next visit to Colombo.

Perfect luxury haven in Sri Lanka. Very peaceful, gorgeous rooms and villas. Food was finger-licking! Service is 5 stars! The vistas around the hotel are breathtaking. Perfect for a romantic or a relaxation getaway, but also for families. We stayed there 2 nights with our 3-year old toddler, and we had a lot of fun. They provide games and boards for the pool. I love this place, and want to come back!!

Room Tip: The Villas are amazing!

We really enjoyed our stay here. The house is terrific and very comfortable. It has everything you would need and Kamindika (housekeeper) and Tilak (cook) made us very welcome. It was a treat that we also got to meet the owners Alison and Githe who very kindly arranged for us to have a discounted massage at the fabulous Sanctuary Spa in the Unawatuna village. We really enjoyed the nearby (5 mins in a TukTuk) Wijiya beach where there is a reef that makes for safer kiddie swimming and a nice (if rather Ex-pat) bar and restaurant. If there were any negatives I would say that the coastline around Galle is getting quite developed so 'away from it all' this is not and the main road at the coast is busy so travel on foot to the beach or the village is a bit hairy!

Spent 5 days in the hotel. Staff is really friendly, immediately received a welcome drink upon arrival. I see a lot of complaints for the lot of stairs here, but we were lucky, as had the room pretty close on the first floor.

- Friendly staff. During our two weeks in Sri Lanka, i have not met anybody who spoke so good English as in this hotel. Especially the maintenance guy in blue overall had perfect english
- nice pool,
- nice rooms
- good location
- morning yoga
- ayurvedic threatments & massages

- during our stay our balcony was being renewed, it was loud and annoying.
- wifi is really slow with weak coverage
- mobile (cellular) coverage is also inadequate, but within 100m outside the signal is perfect.
- breakfast is below average, compared to other hotels in the same class in Sri Lanka
- meals are average, a lot of better restaurants can be found in Unawatuna.

3 stars just because of renovating the balcony during our stay. Otherwise it would be 4 stars.

About 1km off the main road, Beach Grove Villa is a tranquil spot, well run by an attentive manager/owner and his staff. Our room was spacious and modern, it looked recently refurbished, and was detached from the main hotel and the pool/breakfast area. If i was staying here again i'd ask for a room near the pool.

The bathroom and shower was fantastic, and the room had all the modcon's you'd need. Nearby is the awesome Dalawella beach which is much better than Unawatuna beach if you're looking for a more laidback and relaxed vibe. The guesthouse also helped us organise a trip to a nearby turtle sanctuary and spice gardens which we'd recommend.

We ate here one evening and our curry was excellent, one of the best we had. Breakfast however is a little different to other guesthouses we have stayed at on this trip. They serve breakfast in a buffet style, however you can get omelettes freshly made by the excellent staff.

Overall we had a great stay here.

We were amazed at the beauty and privacy of the Apa Villa. It felt like we were in the midst of a jungle, with birds chirping, monkeys playing in the trees, and wonderful vegetation.
The food and service were excellent. Many on the staff had worked there for over a dozen years.
We wish we could have stayed there for more than the few days we had.

We received a warm welcome from the attentive staff. There is a lovely little private beach adjoining the hotel where there are plenty of turtles and natural rock pools. We had dinner here and we were quite impressed, the tuna steak could have been cooked a little less.

Would have been 5 stars but the rooms need updating in our opinion. Fixtures and fittings, a paint job and maybe some updates to the bathrooms (toilet seats, light shades etc). Also the mosquito net in the twin rooms only fit one of the beds properly.

Apart from that we will likely visit here again as the location and service we perfect.

We stayed at THETHREE for 5 nights and from the moment we walked through the gates, we knew we were in for something special: you will see from the website that this is a beautifully designed boutique hotel with everything, except the azure pool, in white. The grounds all looked lovely in daylight and stunning when lit at night.

The large white bedroom has an outdoor (white) shower area and toilet, which might be a bit too open air for some, but there are curtains to pull across!

The rooms open out onto the immaculately maintained grounds, which include a restaurant (candlelit in the evenings) and a 'chill out' area from where you can view stunning sunsets over the ocean, whilst sipping on cocktails.

The meals are beautifully cooked and, although some reviews here comment negatively on the food, all the meals we had were at least as good and probably better than you would find in the area, even in the more 'up market' (ie more expensive) hotels.

The service and smiles were impeccable and the tuctuc driver just outside the gate became a good friend.

And then there are the dogs - friendly and fun and greatly adding to the unique charm of this place.

If you have to return to Colombo, take the express train from the local station - one of the most memorable and fun journeys we have been on.
