The Friendly Thaproban Beach House!

We stayed here for 11 nights in March 2016 and had a great time!
Hotel is situated in the middle of Unawatuna Beach, just a few steps to the waterline.
Standard rooms are kept neat and tidy with comfortable beds, air con and fan working and minibar always refilled.
Breakfast served by table, just sit down and relax.
This hotel has an amazing staff, doing their outmost to serve you with smiling faces and a good sense of humour!
This is including the entire crew; drivers, reception, housekeeping and our best friends, the waiters, thanks for everything!
Keep it up!
I will gladly recommend this hotel!

A wonderful hotel, we stayed in the junior suite which was great. The hotel is about 150m from the sea but the walk is very pleasant and gives you a sanctuary from the sand and noise.

The staff were exceptionally diligent and helpful, delicious breakfasts every morning and they even sorted our laundry out for us (20+ items for less than £5). The hotel is great but the service provided by the staff makes it exceptional.

We had 8 wonderful days at this fantastic hotel. The grounds are beautiful with a stunning view of sandy white beaches and the Indian Ocean. We stayed in Saffron suite 7, which was very spacious. Having the verandahs in front for breakfast and sitting out in the evening was just lovely, and the breakfasts, both Sri Lankan and western, were excellent. We treated ourselves to the 'Seafood Celebration' one night, which was delicious. Beautifully cooked fish, lobster and prawns, and the calamari starter was some of the best we have ever had.
Our 5 year old daughter loved the infinity pool (as did we!). The staff were wonderful. Very professional and friendly, striking the perfect balance between being available if you needed anything, but generally leaving you to your own devices. The location is good too, with a short tuk tuk ride to both Galle and plenty of restaurants in Unawatuna.
It's also not far to the sister hotel, Illuketia, which is definitely worth a visit with stunning gardens, and again, a nice infinity pool.
Thank you again to everyone at Apa Villa for a really relaxing end to our Sri Lankan holiday.

Room Tip: We were very happy with Saffron 7

Off the beaten path in the tree tops the hotel is located near a few other hotels of its style. Likes were the room was big and airy, the breakfast was lovely and the staff was nice and the property was spread out. Dislikes were the constant construction, the bed was not comfortable and the bathroom smelled very weird.
Aesthetically it did everything right but missed the mark for us on a few points.

This private villa is the perfect bolt hole for a family looking for a relaxing luxury break: you are completely taken care of from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. The rooms are lovely, comfortable and clean, the pool and garden perfect for relaxing away from the crazy heat and the food was divine. We felt like royalty enjoying freshly baked coconut cake and tea served on the veranda looking out over the sea and palms...
The staff were so professional, friendly and made us feel relaxed and happy, always there if we needed them but not at all intrusive. Vikram's dinners were delicious, Nishan was so smiley and helpful and Prema kept the house spotless. We did some day trips but felt that staying somewhere so wonderful we should really just enjoy relaxing!

This Villa is as beautiful in reality as it is in the pictures. The staff are warm, welcoming, helpful as well as discreet and unobtrusive. The pool is the perfect size for kids young & old. I cannot praise this holiday enough. It was sadly only 2 nights 3 full days, but it could have been a week it was soo relaxing! We had dinner cooked by chef one evening & it was amazing!....Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home! We will, without question be back!!! xxxxx

Stayed for 11 nights in March.
Nice and very clean rooms. The location is excellent on the beach and close to restaurants and bars.
Good breakfast.
But the best thing about this hotel is the staff. They are all so friendly and helpful and you are always met with a big smile.

We rented the four-bed villa for 3 nights. Decent (smallish) bedrooms, but common living room not great - very average furnishing and seating only for 4-5 people despite 4 double bedrooms..

Restaurant is a 5 minute walk onto the beach - easy, even with a pram. Food was very good (OK breakfast buffet, dinner was excellent).

Local beach is beautiful and clean, though big waves for small kids.

Room Tip: Probably go for rooms rather than the villa...

Amazing place in front of the unawatuna bay. Many tourists and many facilities on the beach. The hotel is very nice and nicely decorated. Room is really good with all facilities for a relaxation. Just few steps to the beach. On the beach restaurant is with good DJ music at night. Excellent fresh seafood display, everyday as your choice. You must taste the delicious food there. Much appreciate all the staff doing their job with smile at a very rush and busy time too. I show they are happy and enjoy their job when the restaurant is over crowed without fear and fed up. Great cocktails in the area. Nice beach, nice people, nice place, nice food. What else you need….i had a great time there.

We (family of 2 adults and 2 young children) stayed at Thaproban Beach House for two nights in early April. We stayed in the penthouse (room 11), which enjoys that spectacular view you see in all the marketing photos.

Check in - Excellent, Nuwani was extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel at home. The entire check in process was completed in just a few minutes and we enjoyed a welcome drink before being escorted to our room.

Room - Nicely decorated, the balcony and the view are beautiful. Bear in mind the balcony is shared with the room next door (there is a small screen partially dividing the balcony space). The AC worked well and the beds were comfortable. I must point out that the stairs up to the second bedroom are extremely steep and narrow. Not so much a problem on the way up, but walking down them is treacherous and you find yourself having to side step. This isn’t ideal when carrying a toddler and we certainly didn’t allow the kids to tackle the stairs by themselves.

The bathroom was well equipped but there was quite a bit of mould in the shower. All in all though, a lovely room.

Breakfast - The breakfast each day was lovely and offered a good variety. Note that if you wish to order Sri Lankan breakfast you need to place the order the night before.

Restaurant - We enjoyed quite a few meals in the restaurant and all were excellent. While the menu isn’t huge, the food is excellent and well priced. Nice cocktails too!

Location - Well located right on Unawatuna Beach. If you choose not to eat at the hotel, there are loads of restaurants and bars just steps away.

Beach - It is worth noting that the water at Unawatuna can be quite challenging, with a strong current. We saw a number of people pulled under at various times. It meant that we weren’t able to swim in the water with our kids, which was disappointing. The sand is also very rough as a result of the dredging which was conducted in recent years. It makes it quite uncomfortable underfoot and it is difficult to get a good footing when in the water as the sand sinks beneath you. This is such a shame as it diminishes what I understand was once a beautiful swimming beach.

Staff - It’s the staff at Thaproban that really make this place special. On the first day they knew both our children by name and all made a point of greeting them, high fiving them etc. whenever they saw them. Our five year old son became quite the local celebrity! The service provided by the staff was truly excellent.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Thaproban Beach House and would definitely recommend the hotel. However I wouldn’t return to Unawatuna if my intention was to swim in the ocean. There are much better beaches in the vicinity of Unawatuna.

Room Tip: #11 (penthouse) is great but not for anyone who might have trouble climbing the stairs. Not an issue...

I spend the evening here during Singalese New Year. The kitchen was unfortunately closed the time we arrived, but according to the Singalese tradition they offered us free New Year-food. It was very delicious: the milkrice, kalu dodol (it's like a pudding made of riceflour), kokki's. We left the place full and satisfied. The place itself is pretty: white spacious architecture with a lot of food and a sunterrace with a great seaview.
