i have heard about the place but wasnt sure about the rooms. Didnt expect to have decent rooms. It was cleaner than expected.View is amazing.but i thought room only $80 is bit too much for the place. Staff was helpful. Nothing special about the food. do not try the milkshake. wasn't good at all...
This place is right on the beach just above a restaurant. So when we were taken there we thought it would be an absolute dump! How wrong we were! The room we had was stunning! Flat screen TV, big double bed, amazing balcony to look over the stunning beach, and an amazing bathroom! Couldn't ask for more! We had one of the best 3 nights of our lives there, really living it up!
The guys that own the place were amazingly nice as well.
For young travellers that are here to enjoy themselves, this is the place to be. It isn't a family place, and nor does it pretend to be.
We got the place for $40 a night, which I know is 50% the norm, but it was also the low-season. This was incredible value for money for 3 of us!
One problem is the cleaning up, which isn't normally done, you need to ask them to do it especially.
But this place made Unawatuna for me. I was very happy to be there and experience the amazing beaches that Sri Lanka had to offer!
Like many other "joints" in Unawatuna I didn't expect lucky tuna to have decent rooms but I was completely in shock when i saw the rooms... It was quite good!!! However it is NOT a boutique hotel. that is quite a bit of an overstatement. Its just 4 rooms above the bar and restaurant!
IT is however clean. Hot water was available. check in and check out is both at 12.
As a local i'm quite used to not being given the same respect as foreigners when I go down south but I have say lucky tuna you took it to a different level. You completely ignored us. We had to wait for service for quite a while. then when the chips arrived it was cold!!! That was just the start... anyway we didn't stay too long because we went off to see the whales!!! but still don't think i'd come again...
Quite sad really!!!
After a nice swim, this place provided a good respite from the sun (while still being on the beach) and an amazing lunch. The grilled calamari and the prawn curry are both excellent! Service may be a little slow. It is a beach-shack after all.
Lucky tuna 'boutique hotel' says the sign hanging out front.
This is not a hotel, but 4 rooms above a bar/restaurant.
Set right on the beach, the rooms are spacious, with a beautiful view & nice bathroom with fancy jet shower.
However, the shower is freezing cold, the towels and bedding are dirty, mismatched and ragged (with mould, stains and holes in), there's nowhere to hang clothes and the balcony chairs are ripped and filthy.
The worst thing is that there is no housekeeping. No one cleans or makes up the rooms, or provides clean towels. There is no reception so if you need anything (like a brush to sweep up the sand you've trodden up from the beach) you have to ask one of the waiters, who are running around busily serving in the restaurant. The room quickly becomes dirty and an attraction for ants.
They are trying to charge $110 and $90 per night for the rooms, and no breakfast. We got them down to $80 but regardless of price, an establishment claiming to be a hotel must provide some level of customer service. They do not. You pay your money and are effectively left to fend for yourselves.
The staff are friendly, but are busy running the restaurant.
The other problem is the noise. The music they play until the last customer leaves, whilst not overly loud, is really bass-heavy and reverberates through the floor, and kept us awake.
Competing music from nearby bars feels like some kind of torture technique as you can hear 3 different songs at the same time from your balcony, driving you slowly insane (although in fairness there was a 10pm 'til dawn party a couple of bars up the beach, so it wasn't all lucky Tuna's fault).
Overall, this place could be fantastic if they had dedicated staff to run the hotel, cleaned the rooms, provided decent linen and bought some new towels.
However, at the moment these are just rooms to rent above a restaurant, and the price should be severely reduced to reflect this.
Stayed here for 4 nights with 3 of my friends that came down from Dubai. The location is absolutely amazing and the rooms have balconies that face the Sea. Perfect! I would say the rooms are priced a little high, however, they are very nice and have A/C and Satellite TV. If your looking to spend a little extra this is the place to stay otherwise you can stay at cheaper places without these amenities. The one thing that will definitely bring me back to Lucky Tuna is the staff, they were absolutely amazing. Especially Ruan, he is there most days, early morning and if busy late in the evening. He really made our stay exceptional and amazing!
The rooms a really nice and clean, the BBQ at night was delicious, The staff is really nice, to have a good drink and have fun the sea yes its one of the best places, as others say water stops at night don't be late for shower, overall at Unawatuna this is the best
We stayed at the Lucky Tuna for a few days back in November, 2011. We really enjoyed our stay. The management was really nice. The rooms are gorgeous and really unique for what you find in the area. We kind of bounced from one hotel to another the first 2 or 3 days and this one was by far the nicest. It was more expensive than others, but the bed was comfortable, the shower was nice and the balcony was awesome. The bar and restaurant downstairs is popular, so it isn't always quiet - but that said I got some excellent naps in no problem.
The only complaint I have is that the water stopped working one afternoon, but he did work hard to fix it and then explained that it was actually a problem with the town and the other hotels next door didn't have water either. This was the case. He was understanding about our frustration and it did getting fixed after a few hours.
Well, I walked down the beach to lucky tuna for lunch, the place was crowded and the serving staff couldn't handle the it. I saw many people returning the food that they received. I wasn't too happy with mine either. i had cuttlefish with rice, it was quite average for a place with such good recommendations. we were a party of 8 and food was either cold when it came to the table or it didn't come at all.
Don't think i'd go again IF i can help it.
From the moment you arrive and are met by Thilak the manager you know you have made the right decision to stay here. Situated right on the beach the waves crashing the Corona ice cold and the nightly seafood barbecue make you realise why you came to Unawatuna in the first place. The rooms are immaculate however the shower may have even confused Einstein for a whole three minutes :)
This is the perfect holiday escape the staff are brilliant it's laid back nothing is too much effort for anybody. If you find yourself at this island paradise don't bother looking further. There may be cheaper places but none better. Love it can't wait to return.
