I really fall in love with this place! Such a great spot! Beautiful architecture... And a lake that they have on backyard is sooo nice. Room was big, clean and very good design...Also just 5 mins to the beach... Owners are good people, super friendly and helpful.

Amazing little find

We booked this place last minute and we couldn't be happier.
The staff were friendly and offered us high tea and juice on arrival. We stayed in the cottages. Basic but beautifully done. Clean and lots of extras, toothpaste, bite cream, water everyday two large bottles. It was some nice little touches.
Breakfast menu is great.
It is so quite there but you are moments from the beach and all the bars and restaurants.
I would highly recommend staying there.

Funky Luxury near the Beach

Imagine waking up on a lovely sunny morning, stepping out onto your private balcony and surveying the mini-jungle and pond below with birdsong, peacocks crying and the glimpse of a monkey or two. Then you go down to the open-air eating area for a delicious breakfast (many choices available). This in part describes our experience of the beautiful Dunes Hotel. The owners, Gayan and Jenny, and Roshan their elegant helper, were all so friendly and accommodating, helping us in so many ways, including packing us a lunch for our long train ride to Kandy. The location is central yet just off the main road so really quiet. A/C in the rooms and better reading lights would make it perfect. Highly recommended.

Very pleasant hotel and good value

We had a brief stay in Unawatuna and discovered the Dunes in January 2016. The hotel is a calm and very pleasant retreat in this busy touristic village, just three minutes walk from the beach. The rooms are large and well furnished in cosy modern Asian style. And the owner was extremely nice, helping us to redress problems that Agoda had left unsolved in our booking. A very good value!

Lovely stay
clairemac... [TA], , St Ives, United Kingdom

We stayed here for three nights! If was lovely had we listened to the lonely planet guide we would have given unawatuna a miss!! So glad we didn't!
The dunes is like a little oasis in the middle of unawatuna! When you turn off the Main Street into the dunes it is very tranquil!
The room was lovely! So clean and so large! Really thoughtful with all Mosquito products they provide you with also toothpaste! Which was great as we'd been travelling for almost five weeks and was coming to the end of ours.
They are lovely hosts with some lovely and polite young boys that work for them!
They have been open for 3yrs and I wish them every success in they're business! Everyone should stay here! It's not to be missed!

My home away from home
Dinuk P [TA], ,

Been coming to dunes for a couple years now and simply said, it's my home away from home. Every memory I have of my frequent visits to the south of Sri Lanka has Dunes in some way or the other in it. Hands down the best place to stay in Una and much love to Gayan and Jenny. You guys are simply brilliant. Thanks for everything. It's always a pleasure coming down to una thanks to you guys and the staff at dunes.

Very pleasant guesthouse
Boujibar... [TA], ,

We stayed only one night at dunes unawaruna.
Room was spacious and nicely decorated.
The rooms faces a backyard garden which was quiet and far from the noisy delawala road. It's close to the beach and restaurants.
Breakfast was included in the room price and quiet various.
I do recommend this place in unawaruna

Eco-friendly with asbestos
isa-ji [TA], , Eugene, Oregon

The rooms are very stylish and the bathroom is very functional but that's about it, considering the price you pay.

Rooms are warm and stuffy and there isn't much ventilation except for a small fan on the wall. If you think of opening windows, your room and bathroom will be invaded by mosquitos.

They claim to be eco-friendly which basically means that there is no A/C in the rooms to save the environment and their electricity bill.

If you stay in the rooms upstairs, you will be sleeping under an asbestos roof, which is unsafe and definitely not eco-friendly. Unfortunately, asbestos is used almost everywhere in Unawatuna and in Sri Lanka, but you would not expect it in such place and for that price.

I was back for the Third time!
Aparna S [TA], , Colombo, null, Sri Lanka

I have always recommend the Dunes to everyone I know.. and this was my third stay there and I was always delighted!
The room was so airy and bright with a beautiful view of the pond, the trees and plenty of little critters.. I was very happy as always..
And Jane and Gayan are some of the nicest people i know and they always greet us like old friends :) and we end up chatting for a long time :)

nice retreat
claudia95 [TA], , luxembourg

we made just one night there on transit from yala to colombo
the hotel looks even nicer in real than on photos: the garden is really a splendor , as often in SL, a lot of wildlife to observe, monkeys, birds, squirrels
the rooms are quite basic , no A/C, but the fan worked fine , comfy beds, good shower
staff is really nice and breakfast excellent
but only 4*, as to us it is a bit overpriced compared to other places, where we have stayed

Holidays in November
cegedim20... [TA], , Moscow, Russia

We were holidaying at Dunes with my mom and 13 years old daughter and all 3 generations enjoyed it a lot! It was almost 1 year ago, but we are still dreaming about coming back to Dunes. We stayed in a spacious Family room (booked it directly through the e-mail), we purposely choose the place with NO AC, as we sleep only with fan, and during the day we are not staying in the room (can imagine that day time rooms can be a bit warm). I can not describe hot much we loved the garden, how peaceful and beautiful it is, how many bird species we`ve seen, and squirrels, monkeys, lizards, mongoose and peacocks (I have never seen peacocks flying before). Also we`ve got an airport pick up organized by Dunes it was reasonably priced and what is even more important we were really happy with the driver (he was careful and did not try to annoy us, as we heard happening a lot especially when women are traveling without a men), we also went whale watching and visited Yala park through Dunes and we were happy with both trips! Recommending Dunes to all our friends and planning our near trip to Sri Lanka!
