Don't surf in this place
Jose G [TA], , London, United Kingdom

I had a bad experience learning to surf here.
The surf instructor was unreliable and dishonest. He cancelled the lesson twice (one day he was hangover and the second time he got injured). It took me 2 days to get my money back. When I complained about this situation the hotel and surf staff weren't interested in helping and turned unfriendly to me.

Good honest place to stay on the bech. Perfect for family holiday.

My family and I came here to surf and tour South Sri Lanka . We found everything was perfect and safe for the children. The wave out fron of the hotel is perfect for beginners to intermediate surfing. Kabalana is close if you like more power in the waves.
The staff are super friendly and honest so you will not get ripped off with silly prices of food and drink.

Room Tip: Best room for less money number 5.

Good location on beach

We spent just one night and enjoyed being close to the beach watching the surfers. We had a room which was basic but more than adequate. Comfortable bed with mosquito net and fan (also a/c) and good shower. No fridge but they happily put a few bottles in the kitchen fridge for us.
The fish meal was fine but there was little choice.
Service was very friendly.

Spacious, clean rooms, avoid the food

Stayed here over the weekend for one night. The rooms fared much better than expected (for USD 70 per night, BB). They were spacious and clean, with a well functioning AC, and the bathrooms were clean. Not much of a view from the room but that didn't matter because the hotel itself has a great location right on the beach
The beach front was beautiful, scattered with many surfers. its also a great place to chill
However, best to avoid the food as there are many options in the area. the menu is basic, and nothing was particularly good. very average and overpriced.

Room Tip: the new wing rooms are nice, both upstairs and down

Great location, friendly staff.

We stayed here for 4 nights because my friends wanted to surf - Samaru is perfectly located on the beach and they offer surfing lessons and board/equipment hire. We booked double rooms but ended up in triples which were a good size with lots of storage and surface space.
Wifi was good but didn't reach our rooms which were on the first floor. Breakfast was standard, fruit and eggs and tea - but we did get breakfast elsewhere on a couple of days. We occasionally got snacks on the beach too which were fine, especially the fried bananas and ice cream! All the staff were lovely and friendly and the surfing lessons were apparently good. They also have yoga classes in the mornings.
We felt that hotel was a little over-priced overall, but we really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in 15 and 16 on the 2nd Fl, good sizes and lovely balconies.

Great location on beautiful beach, very variable standard on rooms!

If you are into surfing and a quiet holiday, this is a ok place to stay. Go somewhere else to eat and ask for a room in the new part of the hotel, f ex room 16. The old part has dirty, shabby bathrooms.

Room Tip: Choose the new part, from 12 to 16.

Nice rooms Awful service
Azztan [TA], ,

Stayed for two nights with my girlfriend we got a basic fan room for a good price after some haggling. The room was very nice good fan clean big bed. Great location.
Awful service we sat at the restaurant it took them 20mins to bring a menu and then they never returned to serve us so we left.

Oh dear
MihiriEdP... [TA], ,

Had dinner at the restuarant while on a surf stay in weligama.Ordered a Nasigooreng for sharing between me and my husband(since proportions tend to be large in SL and being light eaters)

What can i say but OH DEAR again!! If you are a local you know damn well you can get a more than decent nasi or kottu in a 5 star hotel in colombo for 600-700 rs.we paid 1200 for this one and were we in for a surprise!
1- rice was undercooked and hard
2- husband ate one piece of chicken and gave the rest to a stray dog since it had the most strange aftetaste+dry old meat
3-upon collecting a full plate plus hearing our complaint the wait staff began to give very silly excuses without owning up to it.
4-no common decency to atleast charge less let alone not charging for shortcomings.
5- not that im a princess and expect michellin star nasi in a surf village.Just dont rip people off with cheap food not worth more than 300Rs

Fantastic room, incredible hospitality and the best food in town
HollyMadg... [TA], , London, United Kingdom

My boyfriend and I stayed for a week in a deluxe room at Samaru and would recommend it to anyone. The staff are some of the most hospitable we've ever come across, our deluxe room was spacious with a gorgeous four poster bed & mosquito net and the food was consistently delicious every night, the fresh fish BBQ and the full curry spread with coconut sambal and dahl was exceptional. We spent a week surfing right on our doorstep but there was so much to do in the local area - ask the staff to arrange the taxis as they have fantastic drivers and great rates who are really knowledgeable on the area. All in all we couldn't recommend this place more.

Good choice
JanSykora [TA], , Trebon, Czech Republic

We were there for 3 nights. The place is very good. hotel is at the beach. Stuff is little bit lazy but kindly. DO NOT USE LAUNDRY SERVICE IN HOTEL. It was disaster, our close was dirty and smelly. some pieces i waste. mostly "white" shirts. Good place for begining surfing. The hotel included surfschool and surf rental.
