This is a beautiful place meant for those looking for a nice and quiet ambiance that blends well with the hills behind. We traveled as a family of 4 and got nice interconnecting rooms which looked out towards the lotus pond and hills. The rooms have a good number of electrical sockets (something that cannot be taken for granted in a heritage property. The rooms had no TV (which was great) and the internet connection was strong. The place is well located - close enough to the beach and still in the city. The staff is very nice and attentive and friendly. We really liked this property especially since it also has a higher purpose of greening and grows quite a bit of the fruits and vegetables they use. We spent 2 nights here and would love to go back again.

Room Tip: Look for rooms that face the hills at the back

I stayed at the Nooit Gedacht Heritage Hotel last October, for a week, when I did a tour of Sri Lanka. The beach is 10 minutes walk from the hotel. The rooms are clean and has got all the modern facilities. A choice of Western cuisine or Sri Lankan cuisine is available at the hotel. The hotel garden is beautiful with a pond and is spacious. The hotel swimming pool is a useful facility. It has a wooded area in the back garden, where one can get the experience of rain forest. Transport links to other places of interest can be arranged from the hotel. The staff are very helpful. Trips to local tourist attractions including Yala National Park and local rain forests can be arranged from the hotel. It is an ideal place for exploring the beach, visiting tourist attractions and relaxation.

Room Tip: Rooms having a view of the pond and wooded area.

Lovely staff, but property a little tired.
LindaZS [TA], , Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

We booked this property based on location. It was a short walk to Unawatuna beach and was next to a mountain that monkeys come down from, so we were ok with the basic room. The staff seemed to be maintaining the property as far as cleanliness, everything just seemed a little old and run down. Based on previous reviews we decided to take the "short walk " up the mountain to Jungle beach. Lets just say, my husband and I go to the gym regularly and I would not say it was an easy walk. Also it took us a lot longer than we thought, but after Etienne led us to the top and left, we may not have gone the most direct way. Speaking of Etienne, she zipped up that mountainside like a goat, and by the way, she is 72 and was barefoot! We stayed here two nights and the last day we were not leaving until later in the afternoon. The manager told us that though we did have to check out because someone was checking into our deluxe room that day, he would let us keep our stuff in an empty room and could also shower and change there after our day at the beach. It was very appreciated! The breakfasts at the hotel were also good.

Room Tip: The deluxe room at the corner and it had a nice view

Disappointing experience, but the staff try to please
trainsem [TA], , Melbourne

I booked this 3-night stay on the basis of its TripAdvisor awards and some of the positive reviews. I later stayed in three other hotels in Sri Lanka in the lower price range (AUD 70 - $140), so I was able to compare Nooit Gedacht Heritage Hotel with others. Other than the age of the building and some fittings, the "heritage" label could be debated. One's hotel satisfaction comes from the basics - food, room, comfort, features and I was dissatisfied. The staff try their best to please, but very few of them have a good comprehension of English, so we had to repeat/rephrase our requests.

Food is a matter of personal preference - I was happy to eat the Sri Lankan breakfast options and they were delicious, but the verandah setting for the servery and the open plan seating also allows flies to join in, which is a disappointment. Diners smoking in the balcony seating area caused non-smoking diners inside to move away in disgust, but this is a common hazard in Asia.

Wi-Fi reception varies based on where you are in the hotel complex, so your mileage might vary.

There are lots of plants and trees in the property, so ants get into your room and they find your food. We had to ditch a jar of jam and some sweets because ants managed to get in.

We could have done with some hand towels and face cloths and some light blankets, as the air conditioner can get a bit cool at night. I would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a modernised room with wi-fi coverage.

Nooit Gedacht has lost its magic!!
Anushka D [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

We stayed at Nooit 4 years ago, and really loved the place. We were excited to book it once again on one of our spontaneous escapades, but were so disappointed by what we saw. The reception and sitting area was dull, and had somehow lost that great little vibe it once possessed. The place almost felt ghostly. My husband, friend and I squinted our eyes, and hoped things would get better once we got to our rooms, as we had stayed here before, and really liked it.
We collected our keys, and were escorted to our rooms by 2 scruffy and shabby men. They did not wear uniforms, were sweaty and did not seemed trained in service at all. We did not feel safe around them. Gone were the pleasant and friendly bell boys we met on our previous stay.

We were ushered into our rooms in the new wing area, and were not surprised by this time, that our rooms too did not meet expectation. The rooms were clean, and looked newly built, however lacked character and was very different to the quaint little room we previously occupied. My husband and were very disappointed, especially as this was one of the first few places we visited together, back when we were dating. We had such great memories of the place.

We expressed our disappointment to the manager, and decided to find another place that suited our requirements better. We even inquired on if the management had changed, but were informed that it had not.

Noooit Gadach has lost its magic, and I hope the management get their act together, as this really was great little spot once upon a time. I can’t imagine what might have changed, in the span of just 4 years.

Very disappointing.

Beautiful landscape view and very cozy
Omar K [TA], ,

Nooit gedacht Heritage was the second hotel on our Sri Lankan journey, and unfortunately my girlfriend was hit with a sunburn/cellulite infection on her foot at the time, so she could'nt enjoy that much og the city/place, because she had to stay in indoor most of the faytime. But we can tell you that this old Dutch owned place is filled with a beautiful landscape life, and we even got to see monkeys and one particular 'safe' snake passing by from our pool. The pool was very big and classic, but you could'nt see trough the water because of so much clorine, but it was still very nice to swim in it.
Our room was a standard room, but for the price it was fine and cozy although it would have been nice with a fridge. Wifi was also not so good, but we managed with our prepaid data simcard. We got 2 simcards for 5GB each for araound 25-3000 rupees from a local cellphone shop.
The staff are very lovely and super kind, and were also very helpfull regarding calling us a doctor for tratment etc. They also offer cloth washing, which also seemed very fast, good to reasonable price. We enjoyed the breakfast, which was a buffet to choose from, but we have to admit we were quite dissapointed when we ordered a club sandwich for lunch, it was just a cut 2-sliced of toasted bread with some minched chicken in it and an addional two slices of tomato and a very small piece of letuce next to it - that's far from the typical standard and not acceptable. In other cities such as Mirissa and Tangalle we orderd the toasted sandwich with tomato, cheese and chicken, which was really really good at a fair price of 5-600 rupees.
If we visited Unawatuna again, we would propably not visit the same place again, just because we prefer a better pool with more clear water, and a better beach view, but if you prefer more relaxation and landscape views, than this place is the place to go. There is also a very nice hike journey from the pool/gardden area that takes you up to the beautiful beach. It takes about 30-45 min of climbing-walking, but it's worth it.

Thank you for having us, and for taking us with great care.

An average experience

The room, for which we paid AUD110 per day, was very basic. There was an air conditioner and fans which worked properly, thank goodness, considering the heat and humidity. If you are a person who likes reading before bed, you are going to troubled by the lack of bedside lamps and the generally low level of lighting in the rooms. I'm sure the rooms near the pools are brighter. The one alloted to us was away from the pool; so you needed artificial lighting in the middle of the day! There was a strange dank odour whose source was hard to identify.
The bed was an iron double-bed with two mattresses which tended to move apart. This made sleeping rather uncomfortable. The mattresses had definitely seen better days. Sheets and pillowcases were not changed daily; or if they were, we could not tell as they'd been laundered half-heartedly, but not ironed. There were no eiderdowns or bedcovers, so we requested for extra sheets. The request had to be repeated four times before it was complied with.
The bathroom is *very* basic. No gratis toileteries are provided (something you get in all countries in hotels of this budget range). Housekeeping is of an indifferent quality. The staff forgot to replace tea bags one day and on two days, to rinse out the cutlery. The hand soap was not replaced on all the three days we stayed.
There is no fridge in the room. However, if you request for one, you must pay US$5 per day for it.
The food in the in-house restaurant was entirely forgettable. The flavours were inconsistent: so if you liked a dish on one day, it was likely to taste very different the next day. The breakfast consisted of sausages, baked beans (taken out of a can, clearly), lumpy rolls, white and brown bread, a Sri Lankan curry, coconut sambhol and rice.
A word here about the staff. These are good, friendly people who seem eager to please. However, their lack of English is a serious stumbling block in communication. We asked for omelettes, specifying that we did not want any bacon in them. We got omelettes laden with bacon! We asked for cheese and green chilli: the chef forgot to add either of these. This happened on all the days we stayed at Nooit Gedacht.
The hotel provides free wi-fi but the speed is rather slow. It is located around a kilometre from the nearest beach. A tuk-tuk to Galle costs LKR400. The hotel helps to arrange a taxi drop to the airport at reasonable prices.
This is a nice property with friendly staff; however, it is not run professionally. The appellation of "heritage hotel" is a misnomer, best applicable only to the dining room which has a few old pieces of furniture. There's no Dutch colonial touch to any aspect of the hotel: not the layout or decor of the rooms, nor the food. That is disappointing.

Average with the potential of being really good
Dromomani... [TA], , Singapore, Singapore

The property is a 10min walk away from the beach and the restaurant/shop area and hence very quiet in the night.

I would definitely recommend the rooms at the pool than with the "Garden View". Those garden view rooms are very small, damp, musky and extremely run down. Also the roof is some cheap metal and all the animals scuttering around on the roof in the night kept me up. Seeing it's also tucked away among trees and shrubs there are extremely many Mosquitos in that particular area.
The pool rooms are brighter, more airy and also come with a nice balcony. However don't expect too much of the bathroom. Because of years of improper maintenance it still is quite grubby. I made sure showers very speedy.

Staff can be somewhat "overly attentive": they will point out to you that you've not eaten a meal besides breakfast there and will ask why. Or when you come back from a massage off property they will ask as to why you didn't go to their spa. It sort of gave be a bad feeling and guilty conscience which I shouldn't be having in the first place.

Not worthy of an award
Koz N [TA], , Dublin, CA

We stayed here for two nights, good reception by the front lady, not too crazy about the owner though, I do travel a lot, over 53 countries so far, I'm fairy adaptable and easy to please, so here is my take on this place:
the pool was closing at 6pm as we had just arrived, most people hang out at the pools when they come back from.their day trips so we started with the disappointment with their pool hours
our A/C remote is not working so in order to turn it off we have to switch off the main breaker which mean no power at all ( no lightss)
we had breakfast and it's the usual deal, did not eat lunch or dinner at the hotel as there are other good eatery around, workers have a nice smile and that feels great but Sri Lankan are generally kind.
Don't feel afraid about coming here but having a big award hanging on their neck isn't what I would vote for.
Have a great trip.

Lovely hotel in beautiful and tranquil garden
