nice hotel
Sian11862... [TA], , Jersey, United Kingdom

We had a lovely seven night stay at this hotel after friends that were staying there recommanded it to us. The superior rooms were of a very high standard. And the staff very pleasant and attentive.
I have already recommanded this hotel to friends going to Sri Lanka at christmas.

Judgey staff
Parmi P [TA], , Plymouth, England, United Kingdom

The place itself was amazing and beautiful However, due to an incident the staff (more than 2 which was necessary) decided to come storming and call us names. We were staying as a group. Very judgmental staff and name calling just brought the whole night to a disgusting night. The situation could have been handled in a much more professional and mature way!

excellent for families

Room Tip: .try to avoid the ones near the pool ..you are not going to get mid day naps

Raffish Charm
BringBack... [TA], , Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I stayed here on the strength of reviews on here and I liked it. The setting is nice, has a very decadent 'last days of the Raj' feel to it. I stayed in the cheaper rooms, paying 4500 rupees a night, I should have haggled as they were almost empty it seemed as it is not a busy time of the year. The air con was good, the room was spotless and was cleaned every day. The pool is nice and the staff extremely helpful, though there seemed to be lots more staff than guests!

The negatives:

listing prices in dollars, you're in Sri Lanka please use your own currency!

Bedsheets, though clean, had lots of holes in them.

Mattress: even though I had a double bed it was two singles with a fold in the middle which wasn't comfortable.

Attentiveness: this may be picky but on three occasions I was asleep in my room and was woken by a waiter from the restaurant wanting to know if I wanted to eat there that evening.

Would I stay here again? Yes, I quite liked it.

Lovely short stay
CLNA84 [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

This hotel is in a lovely little spot a very short distance from the beach at Una.

We stayed for one night in one of the older rooms. They are quite small, but charming, with hot water, A/C a little dressing area and a four poster bed. The only issue is that it was two mattresses pushed together so we ran the risk of falling down the middle - otherwise no complaints.

Be aware that it is not next to the beach, but it does back onto a pretty pond and the forest. From here it is a short walk to the temple on the hill and the beach too.

The hotel has some interesting history and it is reflected in the building and the older hotel rooms. It could do with a little rejuvenation maybe, but no complaints as it is all in working order.

There are 2 pools; 1 small pool and a lovely big one out the back. It was lovely to chill out there and then take a stroll into the forest in the afternoon.

Food i have to say was average, portions were large, but there wasn't a great deal of choice and fries were an extortionate price! Breakfast was standard - buffet with a mixture of SL and Euro foods.

But overall the place has a certain charm and laid back feel which is lovely. It does feel like you are in an oasis away from everything. I would really recommend this for a short stay trip as it is great value for money.

Room Tip: Book one of the rooms in the newer block - most of them look over the pond and the forest.

Relaxing end to our Sri Lankan adventures
miquelaW [TA], , Ashford, United Kingdom

We spent 7 nights at Nooit Gedacht hotel at the end of our Sri Lankan holiday. It was very relaxing with a clean, comfortable and spacious room with hot water and AC opposite a beautiful herbal mountain and also next to the swimming pool. The service, choice and quality of the food was excellent. The design of the hotel has an interesting mix of old Dutch decoration as well as modern comforts. Unawatuna beach is a short walk through a busy market street with a good range of restaurants and shops along the way. Galle is only a short tuk-tuk ride away and there are other attractions not too far away, such as Kottawa rainforest.

Word of warning- Unwatuna hosts a local festival in mid-August for a week... we were there for it and had to put up with a LOT of Sinhalese singing (from 10am - late at night) It also meant the beaches and streets were VERY crowded, a lot more than usual. I enjoyed the vibrancy and being part of a local cultural experience but, it was noisier and busier than usual if you are planning for a 'peaceful' get-away.

I would also recommend avoiding the trips organised by the hotel and going to local places, especially the whale watching, which we realised was a LOT more expensive than others advertised locally because they advertise them in dollars rather than rupees. You can find decent whale watching trips and other experiences like the stilt fishermen and spice gardens much cheaper along the street towards the beach.

The hotel itself was a beautiful spot, with all the staff trying their best to give us a relaxing experience. They are all kind and helpful and we did feel very looked after.

Room Tip: Rooms in the modern wing are lighter, quieter and have a beautiful view of the herbal rainforest mou...

Peaked too early!!
itchyfeet... [TA], , Reading, United Kingdom

This was the first place we stayed at in our trip to Sri Lanka - and one of the best. As we feared, we peaked too soon as it was hard to find the same combination of a characterful hotel, beautiful surroundings, hospitable staff, lovely rooms and delicious food. The hotel was a comfortable distance from the beach which worked to our advantage as there was a local festival taking place at the temple next to the beach when we were there. Consequently, the village was very busy (but friendly and interesting nevertheless) and returning to the hotel was a very peaceful, pleasant experience. The staff were lovely, especially considering that we all arrived jet-lagged and our eldest daughter was horribly travel sick, they could not have been kinder. A superb place to stay which was authentically Sri Lankan and not some sanitised five-star.

Great place - lots of charm
Marina T [TA], ,

We very much enjoyed our stay here. It is a short walk to the beach and an easy tuk tuk drive to Galle but the garden en pool of the hotel are lovely so it is easy to spent a lot of time on the hotel grounds. The breakfast buffet is fantastic and the rice and curry dinner we had here was one of the best ( and cheapest ! ) we had during our 3 week trip. Very friendly staff. We stayed in the old part of the hotel. The little sitting area outside is a bit gloomy and dark but the inside is quite nice. Excellent value for money. Would certainly recommend it to anyone traveling to galle and area.

Room Tip: Balconies in the new section are nicer than the somewhat dark outside areas in the old part.

Really good!
Tropenkin... [TA], , Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Spent 3 nights in this nice hotel early august. Only a short walk or tuktuk drive to the unawatuna beach, but some afternoons you just stay in the beautiful garden in the hotel around the swimming pool or for a nice massage in the in house spa. Food very nice. Breakfast fantastic, lots of choice at the buffet. Rooms very comfortable with hot water, AC, clean bathrooms. Staff very nice. Atmosphere great. Definately recommend this place!

Paradise!!
111Laura1... [TA], , London, United Kingdom

This is the most expensive place we booked for our trip, but we did so on the recommendation of a Sri Lankan friend and we were not disappointed! The staff were lovely and welcoming. Food was outstanding, especially the enormous breakfast buffet (included). The gardens of the house are gorgeous, the swimming pools are blissful and the rooms were pretty luxurious. We even found flowers on our pillows each morning! The very epitome of paradise.

We were lucky to see the festival on Unawatuna beach, but more than that, we enjoyed the hike to Jungle Beach, signposted from the hotel. It's a steep walk, but well worth it for the view at the top and the final prize of the secluded Jungle Beach. We had a lovely trip to Galle, where we walked the city walls and I enjoyed a very relaxing massage at the Aryuveda centre at Nooit Gedacht. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and recommend it to any friends travelling to Lanka. It's just the best!
