We took our two young kids to Sri Lanka for two weeks, and had a wonderful time at Nooit Gedacht, We stayed in a huge "family room" in the historic building, with basically two huge adjoining rooms, our own patio and table for eating. And, we were directly next to the small pool, which made my kids happy.
We were a short walk to the beach, and I particularly enjoyed the historic charm and peaceful ambiance. There were beautiful small fountains and ponds throughout the property, and each morning fresh brightly colored flower petals were placed in them. My daughters loved putting the petals in the ponds and staff always gave them handfuls to put in when they ran over to help.
It was a easy place to meet other families, was in a good location. My kids loved loved the pools, and we were a short walk to the beach. (We had decided to forgo beachfront for the pools to keep the kids happy). One other tip: I did a fabulous fabulous bike ride with Chameera Cycling in Unawatuna too, which was a great way to see the side roads and real village life. Also, we loved staying at the beach by day but tuk-tuking to Galle in the evening for sunset and dinner! The Galle fish market and fruit market a few miles up the road were a fun adventure!
If you want to stay in a hotel where the service is top and the surroundings are like a small paradise, you should visit this hotel. We have never seen so many exotic birds in one place. You also had monkeys and a beautiful lotus pond. We were treated very well and will certainly come back to this place another time.
Was pleasantly surprised to see the quality of service and rooms given the price. Very reasonable for clean, tidy rooms along with a fab pool to boot! If you don't mind a quick 10min walk to the beach this is a good spot and worth every penny. Take mosquito repellent tho!
Stayed here with my partner just for one night but enjoyed it very much. Room was old but clean enough and the fresh flowers on the bed were a nice touch and the welcome drink was delicious fresh juice. Didn't eat in the restaurant as we wandered down into Unawatuna instead which took 5 minutes so can't comment on the food. Hotel is on main road but set back through the main old colonial building so rooms are v quiet. Beach is 5 min walk or 100 rupees in a tuk tuk and is divine! Wish we'd stayed longer!
Arriving at Nooit Gedacht Hotel was a wonderful surprise. I knew that it was an old colonial building with a pretty garden attached, but I wasn't expecting such an amazing place. The grounds were beautifully planted with tropical flowers and huge bamboos; it felt like we had stepped into a private paradise.
We were upgraded to a superior room, which was extremely airy, well-decorated and spacious, with a large balcony overlooking the pool and a small lake full of waterlilies. We slept very well, thanks to the quiet surroundings and a wide, comfortable bed. The buffet breakfast the next morning was extremely plentiful and varied, including delicious omelettes and coconut stuffed pancakes.
Staying outside Galle turned out to be a very good decision as it was only a 20 minute journey into the centre, by bus or taxi, and the main beach was just a 5-10 minute walk away. We also visited a much smaller beach, called jungle beach, which was a 15 minute rickshaw journey over the hill, next to the Peace Temple. The sea was much calmer than on the main beach, so it was good for swimming and snorkelling, though rather crowded.
The staff at Nooit Gedacht were very welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful. On our last day, as well as looking after our bags while we had a final dip in the ocean, they allowed us to use an empty bedroom to shower and change before we caught our bus. Overall, it was a very special place and we found it hard to tear ourselves away. Fingers crossed, we'll be able to go back one day.
We spend there 2 nights. The hotel was colonial style, peaceful, whit nice gardens and pool.
The food was very good.and the staff very, very helpfull and kind. Good situation: Unawatuna Beach" 2 minuts with tuk-tuk- and 15 minuts walking and Galle 5-10 minuts tuk-tuk. Highly recommended. Very good massages.
We stayed here for 9 nights with two kids aged 3 & 6 years and enjoyed it very much.
The hotel has a nice and laid back vibe to it and you always feel welcome. The hotel is not new and modern, but it has that colonial style that makes it charming (if you like that kind of hotel). The rooms wish fairly equipped and pleasant and the staff was very kind.
The jungle in the backyard, is perfect for adventures with the kids.
Reviews sounded promising, so we decided to spend last days of our SL trip relaxing in a nice hotel with pool. But already the first sight of the entrance hall revealed that hotel is away from it's glorious days. Some restoration is urgently needed. Our "cheaper" room in one of old buildings was huge disappointment: small, humid, with old degrading closet and bathroom full of ants. Rooms in new buildings beside pool are better but noticably pricier. Food in the restaurant was ok, nothing special (classic mix of western, chinese and SL) though.
Staff is a bit lost, not well organized I would say. Waiters seem a bit lost, not knowing how to approach guests and are not always polite. In the same time there was a group of older Danish people, which of course got much different (nicer) attention as we did. Staff that takes care for the garden had really inpropriate timing for work like triming of the grass (at noon whene everybody were laying on the lawn around pool), sweeping (soon after 7 am) or cleaning of the pool.
Hotel has a good potential, but needs restoration and some improvement in management. Comparing with some other places on SL south coast, for us facilities & treatment simply were not worth of price range 50-80 USD per night.
Very old colonial estate with newer buildings. We had room in new wing, good space and very nice balcony/terrace above ground facing the pool. A beautiful garden with interesting trees, a pond with lotus flowers, a white pet duck, lots to see and enjoy. The garden ends where the hill and the forest begins - bring binoculars and spend some time during the day watching monkeys and birds.
The rooms are obviously not new or modern, especially the bathroom needs a makeover before long. Only top shower with water spraying all over the room - this was fixed effectively with some toiletpaper!
Beds are very squirky and a bit hard, especially the pillows are not so comfy. They are charmingly decorated with fresh flowers, sheet and towels put in nice arrangements. Every day, not just the first day of your stay. Mosquito repellants installed.
Free and good wi-fi indoors and outside.
Breakfast is good with varied foods and fresh fruit. Lunch can be ordered all afternoon, but dinner is preferably ordered in advance. The kitchen wants this for better planning, but it leaves less space for guests' impulse. We had excellent fresh fish several nights. No alcohol sold, but we didn't miss it at all. Guests may bring alcohol and the staff will serve it.
The staff is very kind and helpful. Always a smile and a greeting when you meet them.
Visitors at this historic hotel with a botanical garden are mainly people who want peace and quiet, tranquil surroundings. Nature makes a lot of sounds, but the guests shouldn't. So party people and noisy children may be welcome, regarding to the staff, but other guests will find them very disturbing here. It is our impression that the place calls for easygoing, laidback tranquility.
All in all: a very charming hotel with a faboulous garden, perfect place to relax. Very pleasant staff, really nice and helpful. Good food, well-working wi-fi. Best for adult guests, since most come here for relaxation and will be annoyed by to much noise, running around, playing in the pool etc.
Absolutely recommended, especially if you want quiet and beautiful surroundings with a scruffy historic charm and the feeling of staying in a park or even a small zoo.
We loved it!
Stayed there for two nights and this hotel is pretty good considering the price we paid £30 (6500rupees) per night.
It's a charming hotel with a huge potential.
Good: bed decoration every morning with flowers, bed sheet styling etc.
Breakfast buffet: large selection
The look of the hotel: old colonial building (not extremely well maintained but very nice)
Spa was not great, therapists talking to each other while doing treatments and not a great technic.
We stayed there the night of a massive party in Unawatuna and a group of teenagers stayed at the hotel and came back from the party at 3,4,5 and 6am so we were woken up several time during the night by this group of kids. And when wanted to go for a swim at 8am there were all by the pool drinking and smoking.. Not great!
There were a (kind of) well behaved group of youngsters but that's not what you want to see when you reserve a hotel like this.
We are laid back hence the positive rating and really £30 per night is nothing! But i have to say that i was expecting much more from this place.
