Tropical Tranquility with Personable Service
CaseyFlem... [TA], , Doha, Qatar

My wife, three young boys and I spent a week at Nooit Gedacht in what was our first visit to the magical island that is Sri Lanka. We had been attracted to this hotel by its claim to be close to both beach and jungle and we were not disappointed! The hike to Jungle Beach was great fun and a rewarding challenge. The breakfast was superb and the service smiling, friendly and efficient. The boys made friends with the lucky cow that had been saved from the slaughterhouse and that now grazes in peace on the front lawn and which is reflective of the sympathetic and sustainable approach which the owners take to conducting business. A treat, a delight and a week we'll never forget!

Room Tip: The more modern rooms are more comfortable and mosquito proof!

Great choice to stay when in Unawatuna!
Apinash S [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

We stayed in one of the Ambassador rooms (2 rooms interconnected).

Nooit Gedacht is a nice base to be at when in Unawatuna as it is away from the main party scene (You can get some shut eye in the early hours of the morning). It has large gardens and a mountain as a backdrop.

Overall: Clean rooms, clean bathrooms, good service, mediocre food.

Will be back!!

Tranquil haven

I stayed here with my partner for a few nights in January. We were a bit apprehensive having read the reviews. We were utterly blown away by the outstanding staff and the beautiful tranquil gardens. This is not a five star resort, and the price is very good. It is just stupid to quibble about not having 5 star luxury when you are not paying for 5 star luxury.
We loved it so much we extended our stay and then returned again at the end of our trip.
We found the breakfast to be impeccable and of the highest standard, equalling the breakfasts we had in the actual 5 star hotels we stayed in in SL and trust me, we are picky!
We stayed in the superior rooms which were perfectly comfortable.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It is excellent value for money.

Pleasant enough, breakfast is poor

This hotel is in a converted Dutch colonial building and so has some charm. It is however run down overall - even in the new block where our room was.

The hotel gardens are rambling and quite pleasant.

There are two swimming pools - the smaller of the two didn't look very clean at all so I would avoid

The breakfast is poor - poor quality ingredients and lousy coffee which was very disappointing

The hotel wifi only works in the lounge area and doesn't cover the bedrooms which was annoying

The staff were quite friendly and helpful

The hotel is in a great location only a few mins walk from the beach

This hotel didn't seem particularly clean - the room was clean but the bathroom felt run down and unclean - even in he new block

A good budget hotel overall but could definitely improve!

nice hotel

We had a lovely seven night stay at this hotel after friends that were staying there recommanded it to us. The superior rooms were of a very high standard. And the staff very pleasant and attentive.
I have already recommanded this hotel to friends going to Sri Lanka at christmas.

Judgey staff
Parmi P [TA], , Plymouth, England, United Kingdom

The place itself was amazing and beautiful However, due to an incident the staff (more than 2 which was necessary) decided to come storming and call us names. We were staying as a group. Very judgmental staff and name calling just brought the whole night to a disgusting night. The situation could have been handled in a much more professional and mature way!

excellent for families

Raffish Charm
BringBack... [TA], , Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I stayed here on the strength of reviews on here and I liked it. The setting is nice, has a very decadent 'last days of the Raj' feel to it. I stayed in the cheaper rooms, paying 4500 rupees a night, I should have haggled as they were almost empty it seemed as it is not a busy time of the year. The air con was good, the room was spotless and was cleaned every day. The pool is nice and the staff extremely helpful, though there seemed to be lots more staff than guests!

The negatives:

listing prices in dollars, you're in Sri Lanka please use your own currency!

Bedsheets, though clean, had lots of holes in them.

Mattress: even though I had a double bed it was two singles with a fold in the middle which wasn't comfortable.

Attentiveness: this may be picky but on three occasions I was asleep in my room and was woken by a waiter from the restaurant wanting to know if I wanted to eat there that evening.

Would I stay here again? Yes, I quite liked it.

Lovely short stay
CLNA84 [TA], , Colombo, Sri Lanka

This hotel is in a lovely little spot a very short distance from the beach at Una.

We stayed for one night in one of the older rooms. They are quite small, but charming, with hot water, A/C a little dressing area and a four poster bed. The only issue is that it was two mattresses pushed together so we ran the risk of falling down the middle - otherwise no complaints.

Be aware that it is not next to the beach, but it does back onto a pretty pond and the forest. From here it is a short walk to the temple on the hill and the beach too.

The hotel has some interesting history and it is reflected in the building and the older hotel rooms. It could do with a little rejuvenation maybe, but no complaints as it is all in working order.

There are 2 pools; 1 small pool and a lovely big one out the back. It was lovely to chill out there and then take a stroll into the forest in the afternoon.

Food i have to say was average, portions were large, but there wasn't a great deal of choice and fries were an extortionate price! Breakfast was standard - buffet with a mixture of SL and Euro foods.

But overall the place has a certain charm and laid back feel which is lovely. It does feel like you are in an oasis away from everything. I would really recommend this for a short stay trip as it is great value for money.

Room Tip: Book one of the rooms in the newer block - most of them look over the pond and the forest.

Relaxing end to our Sri Lankan adventures
miquelaW [TA], , Ashford, United Kingdom

We spent 7 nights at Nooit Gedacht hotel at the end of our Sri Lankan holiday. It was very relaxing with a clean, comfortable and spacious room with hot water and AC opposite a beautiful herbal mountain and also next to the swimming pool. The service, choice and quality of the food was excellent. The design of the hotel has an interesting mix of old Dutch decoration as well as modern comforts. Unawatuna beach is a short walk through a busy market street with a good range of restaurants and shops along the way. Galle is only a short tuk-tuk ride away and there are other attractions not too far away, such as Kottawa rainforest.

Word of warning- Unwatuna hosts a local festival in mid-August for a week... we were there for it and had to put up with a LOT of Sinhalese singing (from 10am - late at night) It also meant the beaches and streets were VERY crowded, a lot more than usual. I enjoyed the vibrancy and being part of a local cultural experience but, it was noisier and busier than usual if you are planning for a 'peaceful' get-away.

I would also recommend avoiding the trips organised by the hotel and going to local places, especially the whale watching, which we realised was a LOT more expensive than others advertised locally because they advertise them in dollars rather than rupees. You can find decent whale watching trips and other experiences like the stilt fishermen and spice gardens much cheaper along the street towards the beach.

The hotel itself was a beautiful spot, with all the staff trying their best to give us a relaxing experience. They are all kind and helpful and we did feel very looked after.

Room Tip: Rooms in the modern wing are lighter, quieter and have a beautiful view of the herbal rainforest mou...
