We checked in as a family of 6. Black Beauty is way from the resorts but still well located in terms of self food and drink supplies.
It offers a simple menu from the roof top restaurant, has a nice pool and friendly staff.
I liked it here, our room was pretty good and the Sri Lankan breakfast was tasty. It's in the perfect place just apposite and quiet stretch of beach and only a 15 minute walk away from the main drag. My wife loved the pool and I found the whole place tranquil and relaxing. A great place for chilling out and reading a book.
The Black Beauty guesthouse is a great option for those who want to enjoy the beaches of the South-West of Sri Lanka. Located in Unawatuna but outside of the main too-touristy core of the resort, it is located merely 30 meters from a smaller beach, which offers clean sea with easy access and a bit of authentic taste, at the difference of the main Una beach, which is a bit too globalised - it could be anywhere in Mallorca, the Canary Islands, or else. Jungle beach, the local greek-style beach is at 5 mins by tuk-tuk. The beautiful beach of Mirissa is some 30 minutes by bus. Galle, a beautiful picturesque Unesco town is 10 mins away by tuk-tuk.
If you love animals, you will be amazed every morning at breakfast, as you will be able to watch a great variety of birds, lots of chipmunks, smaller models of varans and monkeys having good time in the beautiful and neatly maintained garden with banana trees, coconut palmtrees, mango, papaya trees, orchids, jasmin, oleanders and lots more.
The service at Black Beauty is impeccable. A crew of local English-speaking employees is always there to help with anything, and always with a smile on their face. They are at the heart of success of the guesthouse. Our room was simple but clean, the beds were reasonably comfy for the local standards. Every room has a terrace or a balcony with a table and armchairs, much appreciated for an evening chillout.
Black Beauty is definitely a great address for travellers on budget who are not expecting great luxury but require cleanliness, good services and friendly atmosphere.
We have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka, during which time, we stayed at the Paradise Beach hotel in Negombo, Hilton Residence in Colombo and Black Beauty in Unawatuna. But it is our time at Black Beauty that the whole family enjoyed the most and will remember for a long time.
This place is great for kids - the gardens are wonderful and totally enclosed, there is a small play area with a swing and a slide, the pool is small but very nice (no separate baby pool, so parent supervision is required for younger kids) and whole area is full of wildlife (Monkeys, Squirrels, Frogs, Birds etc.). The kids loved having breakfast in the 3rd floor restaurant, so that they could watch all the animals.
The staff were very friendly and provided great service, even providing toys for our kids to play with while in the pool or gardens.
The rooms are basic, but comfortable. The restaurant has a limited menu, but what we did eat there was freshly prepared and tasty. The "English Breakfast" was certainly the highlight, with a great fruit plate, some egg and lots of toast which was always good.
There are some issues you need to know - The property is set back from the beach and some 10 - 15 minutes walk from main beach / restaurant / bar area. You also need to cross a busy road, which is a little intimidating the first time. However, there are plenty of Tuk Tuks that will be happy to take you to the village center for about 150 Rupia (US$1.20). Also, they provide a full room cleaning service every 3 days and you need to give the staff the room key each time you want the room cleaned. Additional toiletries and towels were provided as requested (outside normal cleaning days).
There is a liquor store (turn left and walk 20m along main road) and small supermarket (Turn right and walk 60m along main road) very close by.
All in all Black Beauty is a great place to stay, with wonderful staff and great value for money. We will certainly return.
This guesthouse is a fantastic place to stay and relax.
The place is beautiful, quiet, relaxed and exceptionally friendly.
The pool is always good for a refreshment, chairs and umbrella right at the
beach are provided. The rooms are nice, with good beds and a cabinet which
is lockable. Food is delicious and reasonybly priced, its great to have dinner here
on your own balcony !
The staff is ALWAYS helpful in any way, and their sincere smile keeps you always in
a good atmosphere.
We can only recommend the Black Beauty highly !
Lovely hotel in a peaceful area within a walking distance from the Unawatuna "center". Nice and clean pool, comfortable rooms. This place can be recommended for a longer stay as well, although the rooms could be cleaned more often. The friendly staff was also super helpful with our further traveling arrangements and organized transportations, guides etc.
We stayed here for two weeks with our daughter and son in law at new year. The guest house is situated in a tropical garden which is beautiful and is home to a variety of birds and other wildlife including monkeys! The small pool in the garden is a godsend when you need to cool down. Britta ,the owner is very helpful and can give lots of information about the area. She was so helpful when our son in law developed an ear infection even calling at the local hospital to make him an appointment. She has a wonderful family her youngest Anna being a charming and eloquent little girl. The biggest plus are the staff whom we named our magic boys! The boys were so helpful and attentive. If you require the room cleaning or clean towels etc it will be done straight away. If you want tea, coffee or meals on your veranda rather than go up to the rooftop restaurant just ask and it will appear. The boys happy ,helpful manner really makes this place special. Unawatuna is lovely, but try Mirissa too,the beach is beautiful. All in all a wonderful holiday ,we would definitely go back to this lovely guest house. PS try the restaurant it has wonderful views and the food is .good
We had a great stay here... The food was fabulous... I would recommend eating here in the evening... The pool was so pretty and really clean... The tree top restaurant was in an ideal location... We saw monkeys and chipmunks... The staff couldn't have been nicer and more helpful... Five stars all round
I went there 1 month ago and this place is very clean (no bedbugs there on the contrary of my GH in Tangalle!!!), the staff very friendly and the location is very good in front of the sea. The swimming pool is very good and the food of the restaurant was divine. I recommend this place and it is a good value for money.
