Reunited with old friends
Sandie S [TA], , Droitwich, United Kingdom

I first stayed here in February 2004. Abey and Pushpa were so welcoming then, that I stayed 5 nights rather than just the one as I had originally intended. I vowed to come back, and although it took me 11 years, I managed to do so in March 2015.
It was as though I had never been away. Pushpa and Abey were just sooo friendly and welcoming.
The rooms are en-suite with fans, and are excellent value for money. Fairly basic, but the beds are comfortable, and on the whole that is the main reason to use the room as the beach is only a short walk away. The rooms themselves are quiet, although you can hear the music from the beach if someone decides to have a party, but as Mirissa is a small town I think that will apply to most properties.
Pushpa will provide meals if you ask in advance, and they are lovely. They also arranged a driver for us for a days sightseeing which was great.
They have a security man on the gate in the evenings so there is no feeling of danger.
Having re-discovered this gem of a place, we are coming again next year so we can spend longer with them.

Comfortable, quiet rooms and great stay

During our trip around Sri Lanka we passed Mirissa twice.
The second time we wanted to stay longer, at least eight nights.
We booked one night at Amara Guest, but after one night asked to stay longer; this was what we wanted as travellers. We needed a realxed place, clean, comfortable, on a good location to visit the beach and restaurants but also a place where we can relax (sometimes you just want to chill instead of 'going out' or 'going somewhere').
With the terrace, friendly owner, big room and very clean we will definatly come back!

For backpacker budget, a gret place!

We were suggested to come here by our other guesthouse in Tangalle and were pleasantly surprised. The family welcomed us with a banana and a Sri Lankan coke, and led us to our room. We had a ground floor balcony with a clothes line, excellent wifi - I could play YouTube videos, a fridge!?!?, nice bed, and one of he best mosquito nets ever. The bathroom was big, with cold water, but in Sri Lanka, cold water isn't that cold.

We also booked a whale watching tour here, but we had bad weather so it wasn't great. Our boat was on he smaller side, but it looked like everyone was getting sick. Regardless, you might want to check with them about boat size.

The family was really nice and welcoming and everyone who stayed here were also nice. We enjoyed this place a lot!

Perfect for the beach!
Kiarna [TA], , London, United Kingdom

We stayed 5 nights here over New Year, the rooms were basic, with attached bathroom. The rooms were fine for spending days at the beach and just having somewhere to sleep, it was just 5 minutes walk to Mirissa Beach. The map on Booking.com and Google shows Amara Guest in the wrong location, it's just a bit north of the main road. The family who run it are really lovely, you can take breakfast at anytime, the security man was also great, was always around in the evenings and made us feel very safe.

Great Place

We spent a week here and it was perfect. Pushka and Abey, the owning couple, are very welcome and helpful with everything, we honestly loved them. Rooms are decent and clean and totally sufficient as we didn't spend much time there. The guest house is located two minutes walk from the beach what is great as you'll be away from the vibrant bar and party life at night as well as from traffic at main road! All over we had everything we needed for a very fair price! Don't hesitate to stay here!

excellent guest house
Pieter J [TA], , Mirissa, Sri Lanka

I stayed a long period in this guesthouse, and it was amazing. The guest house owners are amazing! They are willing to help you with everything you ask. They even drove to the next village to buy stuff for us. Great! The rooms are nice and have a directly accessible bathroom. There is a fan with speed regulation above the bed and a big fridge in the room! The rooms have a small garden and terras. They have place to park a car. At night there is a gard to protect everything, so the gate does not have to be locked (if you want to have a drink at night...)

Would recommend this guest house to everyone.

Room Tip: The new rooms on top level are amazing!

Great place!
Kim L [TA], ,

Such a friendly couple runs this guesthouse. (She even saved us from a enormous spider.)
The room is simple, big and clean. There is even a fridge. Shower is cold (like every other guesthouse) but good water pressure.
The food: Rice and chicken curry was delicious! Fair price.
We would come back!

Decent stay in Marissa

Not far from the beach and set back from the road, this place was quiet and a good stay for 2 nights. Room and bathroom were spacious. However the room did get very very hot so be prepared. Friendly owners.

Clean, affordable accommodation
Jeff B [TA], , Vancouver, Canada

The room is very clean, comfortable and a very short walk from the beach. The ceiling fan works and is quite powerful, always nice during those hot nights. Very friendly owners. The only down side is the unpleasant odor in the area.

Good Budget Guesthouse close to Beach
Travellad... [TA], , Ontario

If you want a clean, spacious budget guest house, Amara is a good place to stay. It has no A/C or hot water but the room we had included a strong fan to keep us comfortable and we really didn't need hot water for a shower after a warm day with no A/C. The guest house is about a 2 minute walk to the main road and bus stop and 5 minute walk to the beach. Just ask the bus driver to drop you off at Udipila Junction from the main road and ask directions to Amara. This is right centre in Mirissa and not Matara as suggested in Trip Advisor.

If you have a couple of room options, look at the bathroom first as ours had water stains by the shower and the toilet did not flush properly. With a spruce up to the bathroom, some brighter light bulbs and a fresh coat of paint, the room would be quite nice. There is also a clothes line right outside as well so you can hang your wet clothes and towels and a water tap to clean your feet before entering your room. The set up is in a nice enclosed garden like setting with 5 motel type rooms. Each as a sitting area outside the front door and wifi is strong even though the main office is in the house across the street. The owners are nice and also arranged our whale watching trip cheaper than what was advertised along the main street. We had less people on our boat and while we did not get coffee, we received breakfast(juice, water and 3 breakfast pastries), lifejackets and a great view and a tuk tuk ride to the boat area as we had to get there between 6:30-7am. The walk back into town was 15 minutes afterwards and it was nice to walk after being on the boat for 3 hours. We also saw a few Blue Whales and several schools of dolphins.
